After parting from Adele at the edge of the forest, Kevin had visited the Crooked Stick Public House with the intention of sorting his thoughts. He'd had no plans to over-imbibe, mindful of the promise he'd made in response to Adele's list of rules. However, he'd run into Will and Rowan, which had resulted in more drinking and less sorting. After a raucous evening, the three now entered through Guildfry's inner curtain wall, their arms slung about each other, deep in song about a flatulent sailor and his long-suffering wife.
Kevin hadn't said anything to his friends about his experience in Hexmoor forest. It was all too new. And honestly, what could he say? I walked into the forest with Lady Adele, we put our hands against a primeval oak and were overcome by some ancient force neither of us could understand, but that made us both mad with desire. They'd have had a fine laugh over that. And looked at him as if he'd lost all sense. No, it had been better to enjoy a few hours away from his troubles in the company of friends, surrounded by good cheer.
But now, as he bade his friends goodnight in the great hall and made his way up the stone staircase to his chamber, the memories of the day came flooding back. As he walked down the corridor, he eyed Adele's door just beyond his own and weighed whether he should knock. He longed to see her, to talk of what had happened. After all, she was the only one who knew exactly what he'd felt. But there was another, possibly less inebriated part of him that counseled to leave it until tomorrow. He stood outside her door, his fist poised to knock, when he lost his nerve. Perhaps it would be best to wait until he could face her after they'd both had a good night's sleep and he'd cleared his head. Time always provided perspective, something he was sorely in need of when it came to his feelings about Adele.
He walked back to his room and entered. He stripped off his tunic and shirt, tossed it on the bed, and turned to the washbasin. As he lifted the pitcher to fill the bowl, he spied Aswig from the corner of his eye, quietly settled in a chair before the hearth. The warm glow from the fire highlighted her corn-silk hair. She turned her otherworldly blue gaze towards him and smiled.
He turned to face her. "What are you doing here?"
"When I saw you were away from the keep for evening meal, my lord, I came to lay a fire for you so that your chamber would be warm upon your return."
She was a pretty thing, and obviously free for the taking, but he was in no mood to deal with her. "My thanks for the fire," he said, pouring water into the basin. " You may go now."
She rose and walked towards him with an appealing sway of her hips. Her ample breasts, creamy and inviting, swelled at the top of her bodice with each breath.
