“We have received this interesting e-mail from Superintendent Miguel Casey. I believe you’re acquainted with him, Padre?” Manuelo Lopez, the Investigating Judge (a combination of State’s Attorney and grand jury), said.

“He is a cousin,” I said.

“You are aware that he is one of the best authorities on police work in all the world?”

The second question came from Pepe Garcia, the chief detective of the SPS, Seville police force.

“I think I had heard that once or twice.”

“His Reliable Security Company is universally respected. Interpol works with them frequently as do many police agencies in Europe which do not want to be caught up in the bureaucracy of your FBI.”

Both men were young, darkly handsome with thin mustaches, Italian suits, regimental ties, and spotless white shirts. They were able professionals rising in the ranks of the new Spanish criminal justice system, thin, sleek, polished. One of them, I was told, was a member of the PP and the other of the PS. I could not figure out as I worked with them which was left and which right (both I thought were resolute anticlericals). It didn’t much matter because there could be no hint of corruption or favoritism in an investigation of a vicious attempt to murder such an important national celebrity as Doña Teresa Maria Romero y Avila. Did not the papers say that she was a national resource? A national resource about whom no one much cared until she was almost dead!

“Don Diego told us that we might write him about your skills in these matters,” the judge said shyly.

“We received this e-mail today in response,” the Juiz said softly.

I’m delighted to tell the truth about Archbishop John Blackwood Ryan, with whom I have worked for many years. He is a good priest and a holy man. He has no taste for investigative routine, though he is quite capable of seeing something that the investigators themselves might miss. However, he has the best pure detective intuition that it has ever been my good fortune to observe at work. He sees solutions in a single quick insight in which everything we know fits into place. I have never known him to be wrong. I repeat, never.

At times he may be a nuisance. He wanders around as though he is in a deep puzzle (which he is) and makes strange paradoxical remarks which seem irrelevant. But he is also funny and gentle and sympathetic. He presided over the romance between me and my wife for which we will always love him.

You will enjoy working with him and he will solve your mystery for you.

MPV Casey.
