CHAPTER SIXTEEN

“You all right?” Noelle projected telepathically as Clarissa stepped into a dim chamber.

Clarissa immediately found the torch. That one lit with a tap. No angelic height assistance required.

She looked back at the doorway and, finding it empty, rubbed at her chest bone. There was a niggling burn just beneath it. “No. He’s…in a mood.”

“When isn’t he?”

Clarissa let out an incomplete exhalation and dragged her hand through her greasy hair. She needed a bath—an actual bath in a tub and not the kind of ablutions that took place standing in front of a washbowl. “I imagine this time, the mood is my fault. I disrespected him.”

“Is that even possible?”

“The magic says it is.”

She’d never felt that weariness before. Her tethering with Gulielmus had always been something she could manage at a figurative arm’s length. She had an inarguable awareness that he was connected to her in a way unique to certain elves. She’d never been taught what that was supposed to feel like. Her parents hadn’t had that sort of connection, nor had anyone in her confidences, aside from Noelle.

Tethering wasn’t always a welcome thing. The attachment had nothing to do with love or personality, but with flaws—with holes in one’s self that needed to be filled. The two creatures on either end of a tether were supposed to balance each other.

She’d assumed it’d been about magic, but apparently not. The burning uproar she felt in her chest and her gut was about grief, not power.

So what torment is he receiving from me in exchange?

As far as she could tell, he had no awareness that they were connected in any way beyond the social ones. And she’d always thought things were best that way and that what he didn’t know wouldn’t hurt him.

It was hard to know what was right anymore.

“This room is empty,” Noelle said. She was feeling the walls, though, probably for loose stones, though there didn’t seem to be any. The room was hermetic and didn’t have so much as a vent for air.

It’d probably be better used for storage than for servants’ quarters.

Clarissa groaned. Just that quickly, she’d let herself slip. She had no need for servants and yet her imagination was running amok with planning and household management chores.

“Next one, then,” Noelle said.

They walked back to the hall and toward the door at the farthest end, near the window.

Gulielmus was nowhere to be seen.

Clarissa didn’t have much time to ponder his disappearance because Noelle had pushed open the door and was pulling knives free of their sheaths, and a person could really only tolerate one emergency at once.

“What is it?” Clarissa hurried to the door, but Noelle held her back.

“Hold on,” Noelle said low. Clamping the blade of one of her knives between her teeth, she grabbed a torch from the hall and held it near the doorway.

It took Clarissa’s eyes a moment to adjust, and even when they did, she didn’t quite understand what she was seeing.

There was a wizened old elf sitting at the edge of a tidily made pallet.
