The next day, Mose arrived with his tour group of energetic Englishers. Naomi had the pies lined up on the table, and Claire had whipped up a bowl of cream as a treat to go with each slice of pie. Aaron had the whisk, and was carefully licking every tong clean.
Naomi was working on her grocery list with her little pad of paper and a pencil. She tucked it inside her apron and opened the side door. She pushed the brick in front of the screen to hold it, then came down the steps and waited in a pool of warm sunlight.
Mose tied off the reins and then rested his hands on his thighs and looked over at her. A smile came to his lips, and relief washed over her. That was the old Mose again. Were they back to normal again?
He got up, hopped to the ground and went around to help an older man down from the wagon. The people were chatting and pointing at thingsâthe fence, the stables, the horses... It never ceased to amaze Naomi how intrigued the Englishers were by ordinary things. But maybe it wasnât just a horse that pulled their attention, or a stable. Maybe they were drawn to something deeperâthe simple faith that supported a simple life. Maybe they werenât seeing laundry on a line, but the hands that had put it there.
The Amish knew their lifestyle was special because the very work that set them apart helped them to make everyday events an act of worship. Were the Englishers sensing that deeper act under the surface of a simple chore? Were they feeling the whispered prayer that had gone along with the work? Maybe they didnât know what made it special. Maybe they thought it was the simple life itself that held some sort of trick, instead of the prayer that draped around it, the blessing that settled over it. There was no trickâonly Gott.
Claire appeared in the doorway and smiled her welcome as the people trailed in her direction and headed inside.
Naomi went over to where Mose stood and leaned against the side of the wagon.
âHello,â she said, looking up at him.
âHello.â He smiled again. âH-how are y-y-you?â
âIâm fine.â
From the house, she could hear the murmur of happy voices. Their guests were having a good time, it seemed.
âDid you see the bishop yesterday?â she asked after a moment of silence.
âI w-w-went to s-s-see yourââ He pressed his lips together, and his face flushed. âS-s-s-s...â
He clenched his jaw.
âMy sister?â she asked. âAdel?â
He nodded. âIâm not going to meet the woman your sister has for meââ The words were halting, the stutter making the sentence much longer than it needed to be, and she could see the frustration in his eyes.
âWhy?â she asked. Had he given up? Did he not like something about her? How did men make these decisions about women theyâd hardly met? Sheâd been on the receiving end of a curt decision, herself.
âN-n-not yet,â he said. He
