Chapter Thirty-Two

GINA

Gina lay awake, staring at the ceiling and waiting for sleep to come.

It had eluded her for hours. Every time she closed her eyes, she remembered Colin’s hot breath, his jaws around her neck, that feeling of bottomless horror when she had been sure he was about to snuff out her life.

I’ll feel better in the morning, she thought glumly, rolling out of bed and heading down to the kitchen to make a cup of tea. And I’ll feel even better when Tyson has taught me how to defend myself.

She’d decided to stay over at his house tonight. She hadn’t even pretended to wrestle with the decision—after what she had been through, it was an easy choice. The last thing she wanted was to be alone in her own home. Besides, she was done pretending that she didn’t have feelings for Tyson.

Eventually, people are going to find out. Either they’ll judge us, or they won’t.

And it didn’t matter. Tyson had proven himself to be nothing like the man she’d believed he was for so long. He wasn’t shallow or heartless. He was capable of deep love, and she knew that what he felt for her was more real than anything Colin ever had.

And he loves me the way I am. That still felt like a small miracle. He could look at her body, with all its signs of beginning to age, and see something beautiful. He didn’t wish she was still twenty years old.

If Tyson and I stop seeing one another, it won’t be because he wants to trade me in for a younger model.

The kettle whistled, and she grabbed it off the stove before it could wake anyone up. She poured hot water over her tea bag and took the mug into the living room.

She turned on the television, careful to keep it muted, and curled up under a blanket, sipping her tea and trying to let her mind go blank. If she could relax and shut out the events of the day, she might be able to get some sleep.

“Gina?”

She looked up.

Will was standing in the doorway in his pajamas, his hands stuffed in his pockets. He looked anxious, perched on the threshold like a bird as if he wasn’t sure whether he dared to come in.

She’d never seen Will look so tentative. “What’s up, buddy?” she asked. “Did you have a bad dream or something?”

“No,” he said. “I wasn’t asleep.”

“Do you want to come sit down?”

“I don’t have to go back to bed?”

“We can talk for a little bit if that would make you feel better.”

He nodded and came into the room, still moving cautiously. “What are you drinking?”

“Tea. Do you want some?”

“Is it good?”

“I like it.”

“Okay.”

“Come on, then.” She got to her feet and led him into the kitchen. “Pick out a mug you like. I’ll start heating up the water for you.”

Will pulled down a mug and sat at the table, watching as Gina prepared his tea. When it was ready, she placed it in front of him and sat down with him.
