Harry shrugged. “There’s nothing to forgive.”

“But—”

His upraised hand silenced her.

“Em, stuff happens in life. Murphy’s Law?”

She nodded.

“I had an insurance policy on the statue.”

“You did?”

“You bet I did. It may have been my family’s white elephant gift, but that didn’t mean I didn’t recognize its value. So when I got it, I kept it. I hope you realize I didn’t just fall off the turnip truck.”

Ember giggled.

Harry continued. “If the statue isn’t found, I’ll file a claim.”

“I guess that’s some compensation.”

“Ten million dollars worth.”

“What?”

“And it’s in your name.”

Ember shook her head. “What did you say?”

“You’ll get ten million dollars if the statue isn’t recovered.”

“But I don’t want ten million dollars.”

“Give it away then.”

“Seriously?”

Harry nodded.

“So you’re not mad at me?”

“Mad at you? No way. Crazy about you? You bet.”

Ember blushed. “I don’t know what to say.”

“That’s easy. Say, yes.”

“But you don’t know me.”

“Em, I’ve known you for four years. And that’s enough to tell me you are the woman I want to be my wife. The one to be my companion for all the days of the rest of my life.”

“But—”

“No. A hundred and fifty years ago, people moved west to escape their pasts. We don’t have that luxury today. Back then, there was an unwritten rule: you never asked anyone about their past.

“When a person moved out west, they became a new person. You judged that person by what they said and did, and if they kept their word. Because that told you everything you needed to know about the person.

“I know what I need to know about you. I want you to be my wife.”

Ember thought for a moment. “It’s like in the Bible: we’re new creations in Christ.”

“Yes, it is. We came here to Magnolia Bluff to get away from our pasts. We are, as it were, new creations.”

“All right, Harry Thurgood, I’ll marry you.”
