Chapter 11

“Quincy McAdams will save this family,” almost came out my mouth, but I’m not a blasphemer. When it comes to saving, I know only Jesus’ name belonged in that sentence, but Quincy could help with our monetary problem. Money didn’t seem to be a problem for him. I could get an advance from MacMusic for songwriting credits and take care of this family. That night I dreamed our home was no longer in foreclosure. I was about to sign the deed to the townhouse on the hill of Saint Nicholas Avenue I’d been eyeing for a while.

Monday arrived and the house was still on high alert. Mason wasn’t speaking to me out of affinity for His God, and I was beyond trying to please him or coax him into pleasing me.

I jumped into an ordinary black suit as if I were going to work and doubled back after dropping Nate off at school to change my clothes. From the footage I’d seen of Beyoncé in the studio, it seemed like she always had on layered t-shirts and joggers while recording. To mimic her relaxed style, I threw on a sheer white tank top over a blank tank with a pair of boyfriend jeans and nude pumps. I topped the look off with layered gold chains. After skipping down the hall to check myself out in the full length mirror, I felt confident about my look and sure of my abilities. I phoned Quincy to confirm our studio time and ask him if he’d pay the back taxes on my family’s home. The idea sounded ridiculous in my head, but I would figure out a way to ask with couth.

“KK, I hope you’re not calling to cancel on me,” he said immediately abandoning all formalities.

“Of course not, Q.” I giggled into the phone. “I was calling to confirm that we’re still on.”

“If you’re ready to make some hits, baby, so am I,” he whispered.

“Beyond ready,” I said hesitantly. I didn’t want him to get comfortable calling me baby. As the director of human resources, I knew how this would play out. “Listen, I wrote some songs, too. I’m ready for this,” I added to keep the conversation flowing. Making Quincy pump his brakes before I got the green light would be career suicide. Besides, I enjoyed the back and forth. “I also wanted to ask you something.”

“Anything you want, you got it,” he moaned into the phone

I laughed. “You don’t even know what I want."

“All right, baby girl, give me a few minutes and I’ll swing by to pick you up and you can tell me all of your demands. I didn’t expect any diva requests this early.”

“Nooo…” I replied quickly. “I’m not trying to be a diva and to prove it you don’t have to go through the trouble of picking me up.” I gathered my lyrics and stuffed then into a folder. “I can make it there on my own.”

“Listen, every MacMusic artist rides around in style.
