Chapter sixteen
John
How does one run a multi-billion dollar industry and sustain a love life? How do I do this and protect the ones I want to protect? Even if I am protecting the one I may be in love with against me?
I mosey into my office, meaning I must pass Serena's desk. That's exactly where my head is. Now, I have spent the last two weeks of what was supposed to be a couple-day side jaunt reconfiguring the operation of my business; instead of focusing on our next step, all I can do is think of her. I am casual as I stroll, so I don't give anything away. I walk fast all the time in the office. Having to get to a meeting or take a call. But somehow, I think it will be evident that I am crazy excited to be back in the office to see her.
It was a weird situation in the hotel. I should have exercised more restraint, but I didn't, and neither did Serena, and it can't be undone. I've been in that situation a million times, or close enough to it, but not with someone I work with. And not with someone I may be crazy about. The moment when we were all stranded by the weather was not rooted in reality, so I don't know how she has been. I need to learn how she's processed it. I take for granted that there is no need to check in with her since we work together.
Neither of us is going anywhere. I gave Serena space, thinking the best thing to do for her was to create a little breathing room so that something between us would happen organically anyway. And if nothing comes of it, we can heal and continue to work together. She hasn't been at the office, but her work hasn't suffered. My bombarding her with endless, mindless tasks will lure her back to the office. For purely selfish reasons, I miss her.
I man the phones while she is, I hope, on her way in. I have Interior Design support forward anything from her desk set to mine. Since I always use my cell phone, I have to have them give me a quick tutorial on how to use it. I wanted to answer the phones and get what I asked for. I am bombarded by calls. I had no idea that she fields all of these. Some of them telemarketers. One of them asks for Serena by name. It's a guy. Instead of hanging up like I do the others, I keep him on the line because I want to know who he is.
"Serena Sterling, please?" he says like he's 'a friend of hers.'
"You don't sound like a telemarketer," I chuckled. "Who are you? You're not her boyfriend, are you?"
I am actually jealous. I wouldn't be shocked if Serena did have one. She's drop-dead beautiful. That could be what staying away from the office has been about. I just went on a trip and didn't fill her in.
