“He’s very handsome, isn’t he?” she asked as a little goat nibbled Evan’s fingertips.

“The handsomest goat I have ever seen, Angel.”

“You pretend to be so dense. You are just like Judith. Of course I did not mean the goat.”

“Who, then—Terry? I was just thinking that myself. I am very—”

She gurgled with laughter. “No, silly, Captain Farlay. I think Judith likes him.”

“Who, the goat?”

“If you don’t stop it this minute, I shall slap you, Evan.”

“Then don’t let your personal pronouns dangle so precipitously, my dear. Just say what you mean.”

“Judith likes James Farlay and you’re jealous.”

“I wouldn’t be much of a man if I wasn’t jealous, but I promise you I do not intend to call him out over it.”

“That seems very poor spirited of you. You are jealous, but you won’t show it by more than a frown. How far would he have to go before you would call him out?”

“Pretty far. It’s against the rules to be fighting duels. Both the winner and the loser could be court-martialed.”

“Really? So your rank is more important to you than—”

“Certainly not, but I think you exaggerate the danger of Judith laughing at James Farlay’s jokes. A soldier is bound to pick up a lot of amusing stories. Judith has a lively sense of humor in spite of you all. I see nothing wrong in her enjoying herself.”

“Have you never told her any of your amusing stories?”

“Not more than one, and you remember how that went down. Also, she says she will never marry. That doesn’t just apply to me, I take it?”

“No, she means it. Seems an absolute waste to me.”

“Yes, try as I might I cannot see her as a nun.”

“As a what?”

“As a nun, in a convent.”

“What absurdity is this?”

“For some reason she has decided to convert and go into religious life. I suppose it is the kind of calling—”

Evan’s musings were interrupted by Angel’s peal of laughter.

“What is so funny? I think it’s a damned waste, too.”

“She’s having you on,” Angel gasped. “Judith has the drollest sense of humor. She has me going all the time. You couldn’t possibly have fallen for that or you are not as smart as Terry. I promise you he would never have believed it.”

“It wasn’t she who told it to me, but Helen,” Evan said with some heat. He was not at all used to being laughed at by Angel.

“Well, if it comes to that, who do you think Judith learned such joking from?” the girl asked, drawing her shawl up over her head and putting on a somber face. When she got to the point of pressing her hands together, Evan lunged after her with an oath. For the moment she was much faster than he was, but it did not make a good impression on anyone that he was caught chasing her back to the yard, with her screaming gleefully. They all glared at him, except Sylvia, who looked speculative, and her cousin, who grinned at him.

James rose and came over to him with a glass and an open bottle of wine.
