While IISc is not overdetermined by religious festivals, Ayudha Puja stands out as a notable moment of participation that permits a wide variance in belief. In academic culture, Ayudha Puja is widespread, though not completely ubiquitous. At “sterile” NCBS, for example, no public celebrations take place; nevertheless, one researcher there told me that an individual would not be penalized or looked down upon if he or she made a personal affair of it. The acceptance of different approaches and levels of devotion is common in Indian work culture. As Daniel Gold notes in another context: “given the diversity of religiocultural traditions in India, people there tend to stop noticing others’ harmlessly unusual ways.”48
