“THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING,” Jason said slowly as he read through the Denton file. He looked over at April, assessing her mood. “We can’t rule out the possibility that this Denton character is involved, even though he’s supposed to be dead. It all makes sense though, however unlikely it might seem.”

“Shatemuc has been dead though, for two years, Nat argued. Why would Denton still be here?”

“Because he’s established himself here,” April added slowly, her eyes narrowing. “That’s the only possible explanation. He wants to remain here. After all, it’s his home area. Somehow he knows we are looking into my dad’s death. He wants to make sure there isn’t anything to find. That is if we go with the Denton theory,” she added.

“You need to be really careful, April,” Jason warned. “Don’t tell anyone about this file or the safety deposit box. Not even your mother. Keep it between the three of us. I’ll send this DNA out to be processed under urgent orders to see if it matches up with the DNA on the two women Shatemuc was investigating. I already put a rush on the evidence collected in Bryan’s office. In the meantime, I think you and Nat should go back to Revere and continue your lives there.”

“I don’t have a life there,” April snapped uneasily. “Just an apartment. I’ve been doing undercover work all this time.”

“Then get a job there,” Jason barked. “You have to admit, things have really heated up since you’ve been back home. If you go back to a normal life of work and playing with your tarot cards or whatever else you do, then maybe Denton will relax. Or if not Denton, then whoever it is.”

April’s nostrils flared. “Did you just pat me on the head and offer me a lollipop while you figure this out? Because that’s not happening!”

Jason’s fierce gaze swiveled to Nat. “Either you straighten her out or I will,” he warned. “I don’t want her getting killed putting her nose in where it doesn’t belong.”

“Stop treating me like a child,” April yelled in outrage. “I’m a licensed private investigator!”

“You’re Rebecca’s child,” Jason shouted back, the veins on his forehead popping out. “And you could have been my child!” He ran his fingers through his hair, his hand trembling slightly as Nat and April stared at him with their mouths open. He cursed himself for letting his emotions get the best of him. That hadn’t happened in years.

“What are you saying?” April whispered, her face white with shock.

Jason held up his bandaged hands. “Look, I apologize for my outburst. Of course you are not my child, I didn’t mean to insinuate that you were. I admit I was in love with your mother, but she fell in love with Shatemuc. I am human, after all, and I don’t want anything to happen to you or her. I’ve watched you grow up and I worry about you. Please...I’m asking you. Go back to Revere and let me handle this part of it. I have resources you don’t have to hack into to get results.
