Chapter Eight

Alaska

I haven’t had nightmares for several nights now. It’s odd because I’m still not entirely at ease. It’s been so long since I’ve spoken about my past, but it still rings so fresh in my mind. Like Tanner is right beyond Taylis’ lair opening – waiting to take me back home to the little room in the basement, or my bedroom with the pink sheets and rainbow comforter. Things are getting better. I can’t pretend they’re not, but I can’t help but notice the fewer night terrors I have, the more uneasy I grow during the day.

Taylis has been surprisingly patient about the whole ordeal. I leave out most of the gory details not only because I don’t want him to hear them, but because I don’t want to listen to them. Hearing them out loud makes them too real. Too painful. Too likely to happen once again. But I appreciate Taylis’ change. He’s more patient lately. He doesn’t rush me, and when I want to speak to Arizona, he doesn’t mind.

I wonder if I should tell Arizona what’s happening. Not only about Taylis and myself, but the outsiders who don’t care if a human female is mated or not. There’s still plenty of women on Hethdiss who don’t have a mate following them around, and I know for a fact that the workout twins like jogging around the borders every morning, noon, and night. But for some reason, it’s not on my mind as much as it should be. Because all I can think about is Taylis and how he’s accepting every part of me. And he seems more open to choosing an alien as an official mate, and not just to keep me safe.

Which he’s pretty much doing around the clock anyway.

For the first time since Mom died, and then again when I met Arizona for the first time, I feel safe and like someone truly has my back and is going to protect me. I think Taylis wants to be someone special in my life, and I’m surprised by how much I’m all for that, as well.

Deciding that I’ve hidden in his lair long enough, I tell Taylis I’m going outside for some fresh air. He arches a skeptical eyebrow but lets me go. I think he knows I don’t mind being ordered around, so long as I feel like I’m not leashed and collared by his side. But I can tell he’s worried about me being out of his sight. I promise I’m only going to the secondary Gathering Room, even if it is only to sit and listen to other conversations, and he seems satisfied enough with this that he lets me go.

I’m walking past some of the private lairs though when I notice a familiar voice. Arizona’s mate. Drozass. He’s talking to someone else. I think Kansas and Dakota’s mates – who are idiots, if you ask me, and their voices carry into the hallways, making it almost impossible not to want to stop and listen.
