It was 11 am when I finally stumbled out of the room.

“Good morning.”

“You mean good afternoon,” Mia teased. “You look so much better.”

“I thought you’d be at the office.”

“Are you crazy? The girls can handle it for one day. I wanted to be here when you woke up. How are you feeling?”

“Better, thanks. I was thinking. It’s probably better to go to see Mom rather than call her. Will you take me?”

“Of course. Do you want to swing by your place first for a change of clothes?”

“What? You don’t like my new sweats look?” I grinned.

“Sam, you could make a flour bag look stylish. I just think you need to look your best when you see your mom. That way she won’t think you were abducted and tortured by the sweat suit gang.”

“Haha. Okay, thanks.”

Walking into my apartment was Heaven. I missed my home more than I’d realized. To my surprise, my plants were in tip-top shape, and the place looked as if it had been cleaned.

“Who watered the plants?”

“Your Mom. She insisted. Said it was to keep the plants going, but I think she came here to feel close to you.”

Tears welled up in my eyes at that. I got dressed as quickly as I could so I could surprise Mom.

All hell broke loose when I got to the house. Luca apologized profusely for not protecting me, Mom threw her arms around me and burst into tears, and the staff gathered around us to celebrate my return.

Poor Mom wouldn’t let me go. She held on tightly and sobbed like a little child, as did I. Our reunion was interrupted by a familiar voice. Adriano Brambilla.

“You’re back.”

“Hello, Adriano.”

“Where have you been?”

I detested Adriano almost as much as I had Luigi. A class-A suck up and self-appointed heir to the Barone Family throne, Adriano insisted on asserting his authority. I imagined the death of Luigi must have come as a welcome surprise to him.

The staff left quietly–cowards–and Mom let go of me.

“I’m fine, thank you for asking.”

I had to be careful with Adriano. I got away with much more cheek when it came to Luigi. He tried, at least, to be civil because he was married to my mother. But, with Adriano, there was no loyalty at play. And now that Luigi was out of the picture, he had no reason to play nice.

I hated the way Adriano’s beady eyes roamed my body, usually settling on my tits. Creepy fucking pervert.

“I don’t suppose you had anything to do with your father’s demise?”

I couldn’t believe he would ask me that. And in front of my mother, no less! Didn’t he have any respect?

“Stepfather. And I’m going to pretend you didn’t just ask me that.”

“You must surely understand my suspicion, Samantha. Luigi is dead and you disappear for a week.”

“Abducted, not disappeared.”

“I see. Are you saying you escaped this abductor’s claws?”

“Stop it, Adriano,” Mom said firmly. “Samantha has been through enough without you accusing her of murder.”

I’d never seen Mom that mad before. Her eyes were glowing with rage.
