Chapter 17

RYAN

“A baby?” I screamed at Toni as we sat in my rental car as she looked at me with a tired expression. Fat twists down her shoulders while the ones at the top were pulled into a ponytail with a black scarf tied around her edges. She tucked her leg underneath her in the black biker shorts she wore and a gray t-shirt. Eric Bellinger playing on the radio while she sat there looking at me while biting at her bottom lip. Dark eyes watching me as I glared at her angrily. “That’s how we rockin’ now? We keeping secrets?”

“What you want me to say, it wasn’t my business to tell. You don’t tell me anything about your cousin, so why should I tell you anything about what my sister does? I'm honest about things when it pertains to you and I, or when it’s something about me that will affect what we have going. Or, if it’s only about me and me only,” she asked as if she was over the conversation and it barely got started. Eyes looking at her orange nails.

“You tell things like that when a child is involved, Toni! You're dead wrong! She's dead wrong for not even telling that man that he’s about to welcome a baby into this world! Know that man would have been there for her.”

“Look,” she said, emphasizing the word as her eyes were glowering over at me, nails pointing in my direction. “I told you it wasn’t my place to tell. Much I could do is offer advice, and that’s it. If she wants to hide a whole child for years it’s her decision and her child. Point is I’m going to stay ten toes down for my sis and nobody will make me do any different. Don't know why you even want to keep this conversation go.”

“Because it’s not right, Toni,” I said, shaking my head as she groaned.

“When you said you were coming through, this is not how I envisioned the night going.”

“Yeah, that’s before I knew you were keeping a whole child in the dark with me and my family.”

“You’re worried about the wrong things right now,” Toni said as she shook her head and stared out the window. “If I knew you were going to be on this—”

“You would have what?” I asked as she fell silent and rolled her eyes. “That’s what I thought.”

“Please do not think you called yourself putting me in check. I just don’t have time to argue with you. Especially about a baby that doesn’t belong to either one of us,” she said as she looked at me. “And it’s not your place to tell him either.” I looked at her and gave her the nigga please look. She groaned. “Niggas gossip more than females. She doesn’t need to be stressed out any more in this pregnancy. You go down there running your mouth about her not telling is only going to make your cousin come down here acting a fool.
