I repositioned the phone as I smiled at catching Thuy’s eyes watching me. My eyes gazed over the yellow sundress that looked good against her dark skin. With her hair pushed in a big bun on top of her head with a yellow bandana tied around it, I could finally admire her face. She licked her glossed lips as her eyes locked with mine. She had been intently listening to me tell her about what had gone down with Khloe while eating the vegan stir fry her sister had cooked for dinner. I sat there, eating Chinese takeout as I rehashed today’s events with her.

“Her reasoning for wanting to move his grave is valid, Shad.” My mouth opened ready to say something, until she continued. “Let me finish what I’m saying first before you jump and tell me that I’m not right.” Her eyes looked dead at me in the camera as she licked her lips. “I understand where she comes from. That city reminds of her what she’s loss, she doesn’t see the good memories because the bad from the past overshadows that. Not saying that she should dig up his grave, but I do see her point. I also see yours, too. The way she went about it is wrong though. She should’ve never come at you and threw the past in your face. Gina was right in addressing her about that.”

“I don’t get her, man. She really up and left years ago without so much of an explanation. Didn’t even go looking for her cause I wanted her to live her life and be happy. Her coming at me on something I already feel bad for...just does something to me mentally, Chocolate. Tried to pray about it, but I’m just not in the mood to do it. Just feel stressed out.”

“And I get that,” she said as she looked down and then back at me. “You have to forgive yourself though, baby. Easier said than done, I know, but you losing your son isn’t your fault. Had you known what would have happened that day, you would have done everything to ensure his safety and his life. I just know that you have to take your own advice though. Sit down and talk to her rationally, but before you do that pray and meditate on your words. You’re always telling me that things happen for a greater purpose, and Shad, losing your son has to be something greater.”

I nodded, hearing her but at a loss of words. Looking through the camera, I was looking at her in a whole different light. So, before I said what that was on the brink of slipping my lips, I decided to call it a night. Needed to sit in the dark and pray or try to read my Bible.

“‘Preciate you for hearing about my problems, shorty, you don’t even know.”

“It’s nothing. You’re always listening to mine,” Thuy said with a soft smile on her lips. “Glad I can offer a listening ear even though my advice isn’t much.
