I sure don’t need another heartbreak.

I turn around and escape through the employee entrance in the back.

It’s cold outside without Trevor’s jacket and embrace, but shivers that take over my body are not from the evening breeze.

I am not sure how I end up at the tram station or how I exit at the right stop, but soon I’m back in my tiny apartment. After locking my door, I sit on the tiled floor by the wall, and stare into the darkness.

The boy who used to get us into trouble and then insist on taking all the blame is not mine anymore. It’s if I have to let him go all over again. When did I realize I cared for him more than a friend? It must have been in twelfth grade. Trevor graduated a year ahead of me, but like most of the privileged kids at his private school, he was already done with junior college courses and was applying to universities. Around December, he flew to England for an interview at Cambridge, assuring me that he had no intentions of getting admitted there and was doing this only to oblige his father. But I was still worried, especially after not hearing from him for a few days.

It’s Friday. Only one week left until Christmas break. I’m sulking before the history class and scrolling through the photos of Trev on my phone.

“Is this your boyfriend? He’s hot,” a girl next to me says. She must be the biggest flirt in school, and I have no desire to talk to her about Trevor.

“Shut up, Amy,” my friend, Lily, interferes. “He’s like a brother to her. He’s been gone, and she misses him.”

“Fine.” The girl sits on top of my desk, crossing her legs. “Can I have him?”

I jump up and knock her off to the floor, then charge in her direction, but Lily grabs my arm.

“Avery, stop! What’s wrong with you?”

“You’re crazy,” the girl whines, backing away.

I shake my friend off, grab my backpack, and storm out of the classroom. What is happening with me? I want to break things and cry at the same time. A sensation of foreboding presses into my chest like a granite plate. I have to see Trevor or at least hear his voice. Maybe his mom can tell me when he’s coming.

His house is a fifteen-minute drive from my school, enough for me to calm down. When I get into their driveway, it’s full of cars. His parents must be throwing another party, but I am still hoping to catch a word with Mrs. Wilson.

Their servant lets me in, and I walk down the familiar hallway that leads to the dining area. Trevor’s mom meets me halfway. She’s as elegant and pleasant as ever.

“Honey, you’re here too! Aren’t you supposed to be in school?”

“I was… I am. Just wanted to find out how’s Trev.”

“Oh, you didn’t know?”

“Is he okay?” I panic.

“Yes, he is fine. He flew back this morning. Didn’t he call you already?” I shake my head, and she continues.
