CHAPTER 9
They scarcely made it over the threshold of her attic room before Lily was in Tarquinâs powerful arms. She was snug against his chest, the erratic thumping of his heart beating against her breast, his mouth hot and hungry on hers, their tongues mating. It was reckless. Unwise. Wrong. This man could never be hers. But, a little voice inside her said, he can be mine for tonight.
Yes, hers for tonight.
It could be enough.
It would have to be enough.
Something had happened to her in the parlor downstairs when this proud, unrelenting, handsome man had looked at her with raw, unfettered tenderness and declared he cared for her. Because she had realized she had come to care for him too. Despite his bombastic ways and his perfectly knotted cravats, and in spite of the sense of self-preservation that told her to keep him at a safe distance. There was far more to him than the cold, overbearing shop owner he pretended to be.
He was also the man who kissed her so sweetly, who touched her body as if it were a wonder, who waited patiently for her in a stinking boot room. The man who refused repayment, who showed mercy to herself and Marianne both when in truth neither of them had deserved it. The man who apologized when Lily herself had been the one who had wronged him first.
That man, she could not help but to feel, was the true Tarquin Bellingham. The gem hiding beneath his unyielding, harsh exterior. And that man, she could love.
But love was not what these heart-wrecking kisses were about, and she must not allow her mind to linger overly long on such unwanted emotion.
These kisses were an invitation, and she was issuing it.
To him.
Her fingers delved into his thick, dark hair, finding it soft and lustrous. His lips angled over hers with sensual possession, giving as much as he took. She whimpered into the kiss, feeling so helplessly achy everywhere. But especially between her thighs. He seemed to know what she was feelingâperhaps he felt it, too.
For he was slowly guiding them across the chamber, leading them to the bed.
Thankfully, she had left a brace of candles burning when she had descended earlier, and they illuminated the spacious attic room perfectly. She had been seeking her brother Jasper when she had come upon Randall and Bellingham arguing by the parlor, and all thoughts of her brother had been forgotten. Shadows and the warm glow of candlelight flickered around them now, making it possible to find their way through the objects she had recklessly strewn about that morning.
When they had nearly reached the bed, they stopped, their frantic kisses paused as they stared at each other, breathlessly drinking each other in.
âI shouldnât be here,â he said. âYou know I cannot offer you marriage, that there are obligations I am duty-bound to fulfill.â
Again with the betrothed he would soon have. Lily bit her inner cheek to stave off the wild burst of jealousy at the
