“Okay, flip the camera around so I can see,” Angie, Koya’s mama, urged.

Tapping her screen, Koya panned the camera over the pile of clothes she gathered. Children’s Place was having a fifty percent off sale, and she wasn’t passing it up. Ever since she found out about her niece and her nephew, that hadn’t made his presence yet, Koya had spoiled them rotten.

“That ladybug romper is too cute,” Angie cooed.

“I know, right? Khrome said Mani has been into ladybugs lately. Oh, and tigers.”

Angie chuckled. “Tigers?”

“Yes. They have had some type of learning exhibit at her school on them, and it’s all she’s been talking about since. She asked Kavalli to buy her one.”

“And knowing him, he’s probably trying to figure out a way to buy one.”

Koya laughed. “You already know he is.”

For the women in his life, Kavalli would do whatever for them. Koya had been experiencing it firsthand and still wasn’t used to it. It wasn’t just Kavalli who came through for her, but Krypt and Khrome as well.

“Oop. Hold on. Who you get that newborn stuff for?”

“Krypt and Alora’s son,” Koya answered.

“I’m talking about the little girl clothes, girl.”

Koya playfully rolled her eyes. “For you know who.”

“Mm.” That was all Angie had to say.

“What? I can’t get her baby some stuff? It’s not like we’re into it.”

“That’s just another way for her to keep reaching out to you. But okay. You’re grown, so I won’t tell you what to do.”

Angie wanted to say more but left well enough alone. Koya’s big, forgiving heart was one of the characteristics Angie loved about her daughter. She also hated how vulnerable it made her, sometimes. Koya was trying to wait until she visited to catch her mama up on all the drama, but word had gotten back to Angie. Like everyone else, she was surprised that Remi was pregnant but more concerned about her daughter's well-being. Just because Koya had cheated didn’t mean her feelings about the ordeal weren’t valid.

“Mama.” Koya sighed.

It was her way of telling her not to start. Angie knew it, too.

“I’m not gon’ say anything else. So, she’s having a little girl?”

“Yes. She texted me yesterday,” Koya answered. “And then we talked on FaceTime.”

When Remi’s name popped up on the screen while she was at work, Koya almost didn’t answer. She hadn’t reached out in a while, so the unexpected call piqued Koya’s interest. Plus, their breakup didn’t end with them hating one another, so Koya saw no reason not to be nice. Remi had just left her doctor’s appointment with Markeese and wanted to share the good news about what they were having.

Their conversation only happened and lasted ten minutes because Markeese had run into Chipotle to grab them some food. That was enough time for Koya to feel happiness for Remi and decide that she wanted to buy her daughter some things. Remi’s situation wasn’t ideal, but she was handling it the best she knew how. She had no choice, considering she’d gotten herself in it.
