Chapter Twelve
Daisy watched Erin as Alex showed everyone the house he planned to move into before the harvest season. Daisyâs parents were asking Alex and his pa all kinds of questions about the place. Instead of joining in the questions, however, Erin seemed content to study the room they were in on her own. If Daisy guessed right, Erin was wondering what it might be like to live here, though sheâd never come out and admit it, not even to herself.
Daisy hadnât thought her sister was the stubborn type, but her sister was stubborn alright. Daisy wasnât stupid. Erin might love animals, but she didnât love them enough to volunteer to feed them if Alex was nearby. At least, she wouldnât have done it in the past. She did it this morning, though. On top of that, Erin had put on her best clothes. There wasnât a special occasion. All they were doing was helping Alexâs ma in the kitchen.
Daisy gave a glance at her sister as she traced the edge of the window. The only time Erin did that was when she was planning to make curtains and wanted to know how big they should be.
âThereâs a lot of space in this kitchen,â Daisyâs ma said. âYou can have five women in here at once, and they wonât bump into each other like we do at our house.â
Veronica gave Ian and Alex a pointed look. âI told you two that sacrificing the room in the parlor to have a bigger kitchen would be worth it. You need to think like a woman when youâre building a house.â
âWe were living in a sod house when we built our place,â Daisyâs pa said. âOur kitchen seemed big at first, but, as the girls grew up, we realized it wasnât that big after all.â
âNow that the girls are getting married and leaving home, itâs back to being big,â Daisyâs ma replied.
Daisy caught a flicker of disappointment on her paâs face before he said, âYes, they grow up too fast. Itâs too bad they didnât stay children longer.â
Her ma rubbed his back. âThatâs what grandchildren are for.â
âIt sure would be nice to have some grandchildren that were close by.â His gaze went to Alex and then to Erin.
Daisyâs eyebrows rose in surprise. Erin was too busy examining the shelves and hooks along the wall to notice, but Daisy didnât miss it. Daisy also caught a wistful look on Veronicaâs face as she glanced at Erin. So it wasnât just her pa who wanted Erin to marry Alex. Veronica wished for the match, too, and if she guessed right, Ian would accept it.
So this was why her pa and Alexâs parents had agreed to plant crops. They were hoping to give Erin and Alex a nudge toward the altar at the church. Why didnât she realize that before? Yes, she knew Alex used to have his heart set on marrying Erin. One had to be oblivious to the world around them not to know Alex had loved Erin ever since they were children.
