And now the Pilots had been dispatched to Milwaukee by a bankruptcy referee. The National League’s San Diego franchise, a reflexive move to grab the last available West Coast market when Seattle went to the Americans, had drawn even more poorly than the Pilots. But, even at a third less attendance, the more financially stable ownership chosen by the National League had managed to pay all its bills.52

While Milwaukee had the attractions of a well-financed ownership group and an existing major league stadium, the American League had dropped its chance to establish itself in a market with much greater growth potential. In 1970, Milwaukee was only a bit smaller than Seattle, but by 2017, the Seattle metropolitan area’s population was twice Milwaukee’s. And the American League had passed on Dallas–Fort Worth again.
