Chapter 12

Listening to Braxton had cost Tiffany dearly. Without the energy drink, she’d fallen asleep on the way back from her mother’s house, and she hadn’t been able to pull herself together once she got home. She crashed in bed at 9:30 and slept through the morning. Even with seven and a half hours of sleep, she still needed something to get her going.

Am I addicted to that stuff?

She settled on a cup of coffee from Grandy’s Restaurant on her way to Red Sea Academy. The stop meant she was running later than normal and ended up in the drop-off line with parents. She had no time to fraternize with Braxton or Deja after getting her last itinerary from Rhonda.

The caffeine quick-started Tiffany’s nerves and pepped her for a day in high school. As she walked through the halls with students closer to her height, Tiffany felt at ease. These were people she could relate to easily. These students were old enough to have been her little sisters and brothers instead of her nieces, nephews or even her own kids.

And the class couldn’t have been more interesting: forensic science. The teacher had yellow crime tape streaming around the room with outlines of bodies taped along the walls. How cool is this? Tiffany got busy noting the extra touches in the room.

The teacher, Mr. Vorhees, didn’t do much teaching after the bell rang. The students were seated in groups of four. He asked one person from each team to give an account of the group’s case status. Then he set them free to continue with their projects, which Tiffany gathered was to determine the cause of death for a victim. With the teacher’s permission, Tiffany circled the room and observed students’ research using virtual simulators, notes and PG-rated photos from the “crime scene”, and medical databases. The kids were engrossed in complicated discussions and mini-debates, theorizing and proving or disproving one another with facts.

Mr. Vorhees rotated to each group, asking questions and guiding students without assuming the lead.

To say the least, Tiffany was impressed. She wished she’d been in a class like this. These kids have it made.

Five minutes before the bell rang, Mr. Vorhees instructed the students to find a stopping point and journal their findings for the day so they could pick up where they’d start the next day.

Tiffany slipped out of Mr. Vorhees’s room and crossed to the main hallway for a Spanish class. Again, she introduced herself to the teacher, Mrs. Treet, and tried to take an inconspicuous spot. Before the class was called to order, she got a text.

BRAXTON: Good Morning. How’s it going?

TIFFANY: Back atcha. It’s all good. You visit the forensic science class? AMAZING!

BRAXTON: No. Art. Now I’m in Physics.

TIFFANY: Ouch! Sorry.

BRAXTON: Enjoyed yesterday.

TIFFANY: Ditto.

BRAXTON: Stop tryna act like old boy in Ghost.
