Chapter 15
When Emma stepped into the back hallway of The Paradise the next day, she heard a man singing. Not just any man, either. It sounded like something youâd hear on Broadway.
Sheâd just come in from the store where sheâd bought supplies to try out a couple of new recipes. The voice intrigued her so much she abandoned her cooking plans and instead went in search of its mysterious owner. She followed the sound until she reached the practice room at the other end of the hall.
Her mother sat at the piano, while a man in his early forties stood in the middle of the room. He was good looking. Not too tall, but he had wide shoulders and a handsome face that a camera would love. Of course, the physical aspects were nothing compared to what came out of his mouth. Paige stood next to him, watching with rapt attention.
He must have seen her out of the corner of his eye, because he stopped mid-note and turned toward her. âHello.â
Even the way he spoke seemed enthused with a rich timbre, like cognac sliding down your throat.
âHi,â she said, wondering who on earth he was and how heâd ended up in the practice room at The Paradise.
Her mother sprang to her feet as a slight hint of color filled her cheeks. âEmma, where did you come from?â
âI just came in from the store,â Emma said, wondering why her mother looked so flustered all of a sudden.
âAh, so youâre the famous Emma Bertram,â Singing Man said.
âI don't know about famous,â Emma answered, eyeing him again. âI also donât know you.â
Paige took the guyâs hand and dragged him closer. âEmma, this is Mr. Atwood. Heâs a friend of Mr. Kendallâs.â
âBrent,â he added, with a little bow. âItâs nice to finally meet you.â
Finally? It seemed Brent Atwood of the silky voice had been lurking in the hallways for some time. Why hadnât they met before?
âHow do you know Grayson Kendall?â Emma asked.
âWeâve worked together for years,â he said. âGrayson gave me my start at his theatre in Chicago.â
âI believe Mr. Kendall has been trying to convince Brent to star in the first show along with Annaliese,â Emmaâs mother said.
âWell, The Paradise would be lucky to have you,â Emma said in all sincerity. âYouâre amazing.â
Brent lowered his head in appreciation. âThank you. I still havenât decided if Iâll do it. Itâs been a long time since I was on stage.â He turned and gestured toward Paige. âNow, this young lady certainly has something to offer.â
Paige skipped toward him, her face alight with pleasure. âMr. Atwood says I have the voice of an angel.â
âReally?â Emma looked down at her in surprise. âHow would he know?â
âMiss Mary and I have been practicing for the auditions, and Mr. Atwoodââ
Emma waved a hand in the air. âWhoa, whoaâ¦what auditions?â
Paige froze and bit her lip. âOops.â
âWhatâs going on?â Emma asked, looking at her mother.
She put her hands on the little girlâs shoulders. âPaige came to me and asked if I would help her practice for the upcoming auditions.
