CHAPTER

TWELVE

Could a kiss make you drunk? River had trouble walking in a straight line for the three steps it took her to get to the kitchen counter. Her entire body buzzed with pleasure and she didn’t know how she’d managed to pull away.

It was either the smartest or stupidest move of her entire life.

She had a dragon lord on the couch kissing her like she was his whole world. His body was on fire under her fingers, but she was pretty sure it wasn’t a fever. His hands had been that hot the night before.

Surrendering to his touch, to his kiss, was a guarantee of pleasure. And what a story she’d have, of the time she’d run from mercenaries and made love to an aristocratic dragon.

But already she could feel her stupid heart wanting more. She had no right to ask or wish. They were quite literally from two different worlds. A dragon had no reason to want a simple former teacher who was playing, and failing, at being a diplomat. She couldn’t exactly call it a success when the rest of her crew were currently hostages.

And there was another reason nothing could happen. How could they do that when their colleagues were in danger from a group of vicious mercenaries?

If anyone found out about it, she’d be a laughingstock. Or a pariah. The woman who cared more about a fuck than saving her people.

“Is everything alright?” Storm asked.

Her mind had wandered. River scooped up the beacon and squared her shoulders. She was going to do this, the job, and not get all wrapped up in Storm.

That resolve lasted until she turned around and remembered he was shirtless. He sat on the couch like some sort of sensual king waiting for his subject to approach. And as tempting as it was to kneel before his throne, River forced herself to thrust the beacon out in front of her to see.

“I went exploring myself,” she admitted. “Away from the compound. I found a wrecked vehicle. No communicator, but there was this.”

Smoke swirled around Storm. “You went out? Do you see what they did to me? What do you think they would do to you?” He took deep breaths and the smoke began to dissipate.

“I’m not the one who got chased by drones. And I needed to do something. I’m not the wait at home quietly type.” Her job wasn’t dangerous back home, but she wasn’t afraid of hard work. And she’d had to do something to keep herself from going crazy.

Storm’s eyes raked over her, but this time it wasn’t sexual. He was reassuring himself she was safe.

“I didn’t see anyone,” she said. “I walked perhaps a kilometer, maybe a kilometer and a half. The vehicle is on the road that leads to the city, and it’s been there for some time. Maybe it was in a collision with another vehicle, maybe it hit an animal. It certainly wasn’t the product of these mercenaries. Not unless they’ve been lurking in these woods for months or more.
