Chapter Eighteen

Caleb started after Bristol when she left so quickly, but Roz called him back.

“Caleb. I need you. Team debrief as soon as I can dispel this crowd.”

She must have news to share with them. She was itching to get on with the mission. He recognized the feeling. What had she found that had her wound so tight? It couldn’t be good.

He circulated her message to her core team and then they waited while she did what was required of a Society Master.

How the other Masters had known she was back he could not fathom. Many shouldn’t even have known she’d left in the first place. But she didn’t let her surprise show. She shook a few hands, made a few jokes, and the Masters began filtering out of the room.

What had Roz said to Bristol that made her run out like that? As soon as he was done here, he’d go find her. Except that her mother would probably want to see her alone. Would Bristol tell Roz about the two of them? Or...about the kiss at least? What else was there to tell?

And then it was gone, his expression guarded once more, and he swept out of the room.

“What was that about?” Caleb asked her as she walked over to the cluster of her team.

“He just wants to know everywhere I’ve been, and why, and what I learned. Nosy bastard.”

“That’s a Master for you.” Caleb grinned. “Hey...how are you? I’m feeling an edge on you that I don’t like one bit. What did you find out?”

Roz grimaced at his description. She looked around the room. It was just them now – the two of them, as well as Samuel, Ruby, Bryce and Danny. Her personal, trusted team.

“Danny, get the door, please. Go ahead and lock it. I have a lot to share with you and I’m afraid I’m going to have to ask you all for your help.”

They circled up, arms crossed, and watched her, waiting patiently for her to continue. She paced at the center of their impromptu circle. “You see, I’ve gotten too close to something. I’m not sure yet what
