Chapter Thirteen

Sure, I baited Cass into joining me in the hot spring, but I never actually thought he’d agree to it. But here I am, spun around with my face flaming as he strips behind me, all those glorious muscles on display. At least I’m assuming they’re on display, I haven’t actually gotten a good look at them yet. Not that I’m waiting to or anything, of course not. The water ripples a moment later, letting me know that he’s making his way into the pool. And when he lets out a soft relieved breath that wafts to me on the nearest breeze, my skin tightens to the point of pain, all parts of me becoming overly sensitive.

I’m not sure why I have this reaction to him, but whenever he gets close to me I feel like running away. Not because I fear him, but because I fear myself and the feeling of desire brewing in my chest. They’re just supposed to be my ride to Newhaven, the pack sanctuary for omega wolves like me. That’s it. No matter what they say about mates and fate and The Goddess. So why am I struggling to keep my distance? The other night when I opened up to him about my family's sacred braid it felt like we clicked for the first time. Like he understood me in the deepest sense, if only for those precious five minutes. It felt like. . . I had a friend for the first time in my sad existence.

Right. A friend.

I spin around toward him, treading water while making sure my hair is covering what little bit of chest I have. No need to torture the guy even further. He’s close, leaning against the boulder he was sitting on before while running those long fingers through his wet hair, slicking it back from his face. It makes him look like James Bond from those older movies my uncle used to watch with me, dark, sexy and dangerous to everyone but the woman he loves. As if he heard the thought, Cass locks eyes with me, smirking.

“If you take a picture, it will last longer,” he teases, bringing a flush to my face.

“Ugh!” I shout, splashing him. “I wasn’t even staring.”

He laughs, holding up his hands to shield himself. “I know, it was just a joke. Chill.”

We lapse into silence again after that, soaking on opposite sides of the spring, inadvertently taking peeks at each other when we think the other isn’t watching. It’s like a game of cat and mouse, and to be honest, I’m not sure which one I am. I’d like to think I’m the cat, but by the way he looks at me sometimes. . . My god it’s like he wants to eat me for breakfast. Like devouring me whole would be of no consequence to him, and maybe, just maybe, I’d let it happen. If only to experience it once.

I’ve never felt the touch of a man. Not like that, not even by my hellish uncle.
