CHAPTER TWELVE

VIKTOR

I stare in the mirror—and a monster stares back.

Never have I felt so lost or alone before, awash in the self-pity of my situation. In all my life, there’s been nothing that I crave more than I do Lisette. What she offers me is the most forbidden of temptations.

I've turned down her advances once before and nearly lost control another time, but my father's reminder of keeping her happy is forever in the forefront of my mind. I know my rejections hurt Lisette, but my conscience weighs heavier than a brick, sinking me deeper and deeper into a pit of despair.

To be with Lisette or not to be.

If only the great William Shakespeare were here to help me in my quandary. Alas, he's deader than most of the parts on my body, and I'm left to make this choice on my own. A small part of me wants to call my father, but I don't think my heart can bear his answer.

If he says ‘no’, then what kind of man am I to question him as I know I will constantly think about the unspeakable things I want to do to Lisette. On the other hand, if he says ‘yes’—be with Lisette and give her exactly what she wants for the greater good of her health—I don't think my heart can take it when she finally remembers everything and looks at me for the monster that I am.

Both answers threaten to tear me asunder. Not touching Lisette and falling victim to the situation is the right answer—the morally correct one—but the world is neither white nor black, and I'm finding deep down I might be morally gray.

There's a knock at the door, and I nearly jump out of my stitches.

“Viktor?” Lisette’s soft voice calls through the door, and I swipe my hand over my face.

“Come in, Dove.”

She opens the door, revealing her body, still clad in the white nightgown edged with black lace—all sugar and sin—and what I wouldn't give for a taste. She's the picture of innocent temptation, the Eve to my Adam, and I want nothing more than to devour the forbidden fruit before me.

She worries her bottom lip with her teeth, a gorgeous blush staining her cheeks, making her freckles stand out. Her beautiful brown eyes are full of unshed tears, and my will almost dissolves.

“Don't you want me?”

Her question is a barb that splits my heart but doesn't kill me—but how I wish I could die so as to know I never caused her such pain!

“Lisette,” I croak, my voice thick with lust and remorse, “never have I wanted anything or anyone like I do you.”

“Then why do you fight this—us?!”

She tosses her hands up in exasperation before running them through her long, dark locks.

“It's complicated, as you well know. Your mind—”

“Merely doesn't remember my past,” she cuts in, “but it doesn't change how I felt or how I feel now. I want to be with you, Viktor. We're going to be married. What objections could you have? Clearly, we’ve slept together before!”

“That was before.
