Azat took Sahak by the hand and led him back to the cabin he’d chosen for his own. Miles hadn’t screwed them over in this, at least. He might have let the reward sway his good sense, and Azat had to use all of his self-control to turn his mind away from what that might mean about the size of the reward, but at least Miles had given them a ship built for comfort. He had a nice large bed and a room that could fit more than one person comfortably. It would be enough.

He let the door slide shut behind them and locked it too. He didn’t think Siran was the type of friend to go barging into rooms, but he preferred not to make assumptions about boundaries. He didn’t miss Sahak’s little smirk as the lock clicked into place either. Sahak didn’t say anything, but he also didn’t seem to be distressed or panicking or running away.

Azat poured them both some water, and they sat on the end of the bed. “That was some very impressive flying you did earlier.” He sipped from his cup, eyeing the human beside him. “Where did you learn to fly like that?”

Sahak chuckled. “My father was a pilot. He taught me, before the debt collectors came for me. When I escaped, I stole a shuttle.” He closed his eyes and smiled, some of the tension bleeding from his shoulders. “I’m not sure the Rebels would have let me in, or at least let me fly for them, dressed the way that I was, if they hadn’t seen that I could fly, you know?” He opened his eyes and grinned. “Anyway, they put me into a training program after that.”

“If only you’d found your way to a free port instead.” Azat sighed and put his arm around Sahak. “You’d have made a fantastic crewman. I can just imagine how you’d have done on one of the ships I captained, with a hold full of contraband.”

Sahak threw his head back and laughed, exposing his throat. Azat let his fingers trail along that long expanse of bronze flesh.

“Yeah, that could have been fun, maybe. I was young, angry. I wanted to hit out at the Federated Systems, the ones who had hurt me.” He glanced up at Azat. “I still do, honestly. Later. Not right at this particular second.” He reached up and stroked Azat’s cheek with a featherlight caress.

Azat leaned into Sahak’s hand. Sahak’s palm was warm and callused, and Azat wanted to feel it everywhere on his body. He bent his head and touched Sahak’s lips with his own. He tried to keep his kiss gentle at first, wanting to make up for the aggressive kiss he’d given on Vistahm, but Sahak was having none of that.

He rose up to meet Azat, snaking a wiry arm around Azat’s neck to stabilize himself as he threw himself into the kiss. Azat had been worried he was pushing too hard, projecting Arascid values and needs onto a human, but this was proof his partner wanted this as much as he did.
