1 From The Times, 14th August 1940: âIn the Southampton area alone fighter patrols destroyed twenty-two of the enemy. Of these, nine were Ju. 87 dive-bombers, five were Me. 110s, and the remaining eight were Messerschmidt 109 fighters. All the nine Junkers were brought down in the space of a few minutes by a single Spitfire squadron, as well as four of the Me. 109s. This same squadron had brought down seven enemy aircraft the previous day. Many others attacked were severely damaged. Not one of the squadronâs pilots or Spitfires was lost during the two daysâ fighting.â
1 From The Times, 28th September 1940: âAt one time bombers with escorting fighters crossed the Dorset coast in two waves each of at least fifty machines. They were hotly attacked by A.A. fire and R.A.F. fighters and six were seen to fall in flames. One had a direct hit from an A.A. shell and exploded in the air. Three crashed west of Poole and another fell into the sea. The funerals of four German airmen who were killed in an air battle two days ago were taking place during yesterdayâs air battle.â (This statement is not quite correct. The enemy aircraft seen to explode in the air was actually the collision between Mick and the Me. 110, but as it happened at about 27,000 feet the onlookers on the ground naturally could not see exactly what occurred.)
