“Morning.” Allen’s warm breath tickled my ear.

I’d been awake for a while, not wanting to move for fear I would lose my snuggle partner. It had been a long time since I woke in someone’s arms and those few times were usually when I fell asleep watching a movie.

When we were knotted and connected in the most intimate way, I waited for the urge to leave to come. It always did. Except last night, the exact opposite happened, and all I wanted was to stay connected like that, safe in his arms with his scent surrounding me inside and out...forever.

Falling asleep as he held me was everything—which was the danger of this entire thing. I was leaving soon. And even if I didn’t live so far away, it would have never worked. Being with Allen might have felt natural and perfect, but at the end of the day, our goals were different, and unfortunately, they were different in a way I couldn’t overlook.

“Morning. I tried not to wake you.” I intertwined my fingers with his, his arm draped over me all warm and sweet.

“Same. I like watching you sleep, but then you did that thing with your nose.”

“I don’t have a thing with my nose, do I?” I asked, rolling over for a better view of him.

“You do. You give it this adorable little twitch when you’re dreaming, and it got me thinking about what you were dreaming about.” He kissed the tip of my nose. “I’m guessing it was all about the sports. Am I close?”

He wasn’t.

At one time, sports was my passion and it showed. That’s how I was able to parlay the blog thing into a career. But now it was a job, no different than if I were helping people with their taxes or sitting inside a corporate cubicle. I didn’t hate it, and the travel was a huge perk, but the passion was no longer there.

“Last night, I dreamt of waking up and taking a long, hot shower with a sexy alpha.” I cupped his cheek. “I wonder where ever I could find one of those?”

“Someplace not here, alas. But now I know what my next project will be.” Arg, I’d momentarily forgotten about the tiny corner he called a shower. Heck, I bonked my elbow three times just trying to shampoo my hair. “If I knock out the closet, I can even make it one of those fancy kind with a bazillion shower heads… Just imagine all the fun that could be had.”

What fun indeed. But, sadly, not with me. I’d be back home or on the road to who-knew-where by then. And he’d just bring...no, I refused to go down that path. It wasn’t as if I couldn’t stay in Oak Grove and potentially be that omega. It was my choice to stay on the road. And as heart wrenching as I had a feeling it would eventually be, it was the right thing.
