Dry and back on the beach close to dusk, I grasped Lissa’s outstretched hand. I was ready to try again, to mess with my DNA and possibly help in the process. This time I knew what to expect and I hoped I was strong enough to withstand what was coming.

Kai wouldn’t approve the idea of me helping Lissa, as a matter of fact no one knew about it besides Matt, who tried to talk me out of it for the past three hours. They didn’t take into account that I was running out of time. Mr. Maine would eventually find me and Ezlynn would be here in a little over a week. I wanted to be fixed by the time she got here.

Lissa nodded at me and everyone stepped back. Remaining calm was a big factor here and I figured out the specific memory that held me grounded, making my heart calm it’s wild beats and allowing me to focus. I could feel small pulses of electricity begin to spark over my skin and gritted my teeth when they became slightly painful.

Focus, breathe, focus…

I readied myself to help, slowly letting go of the barrier I held on my magic and channeled it into Lissa’s attempting to strengthen it. Immediate regret set in as the shock grew tenfold and we were both blown backward, black smoke trailing from my body. I looked up and watched as a trickle of yellow fell from the sky, like a bubble slowly popping around us. Then it all went black.
