There are basically five ways to place your hands when you’re giving a talk:
Hold your hands behind your back.
Some people like this position because it can help to stop them shaking. You can ‘lock’ your hands down - but doing this can also tighten your chest and your voice.
This position can look formal and a bit military. It’s also very hard to make a gesture if you keep your hands behind your back - let alone turn over your notes.
Cross your arms in front of you.
This position feels remarkably comfortable. I often stand with my arms crossed when watching my kids play sport and I don’t feel particularly rude when talking to other parents on the touchline. But it looks more closed than it feels. You can speak with your arms crossed occasionally, perhaps later on in your talk, but never in first few minutes.
