Chapter Eight

Diego swung around when he heard a dragon roar. It took him a moment to realize that the great hall had emptied of all the dragons. There wasn’t a single one in sight.

He raced toward the front doors, clamoring up the steps to reach them. As much as he appreciated the security, he hated having to run through a second set of double doors to get outside.

He reached the front steps just in time to watch a horde of dragons disappear into the clouds. Diego watched for another moment, waiting for them to turn around or circle around or something. When they didn’t, he turned to scan the inner bailey.

No dragons.

A slow-burning anger ignited in Diego’s gut. They had all left, every last one of them. Except for the human soldiers, the entire keep and everyone in it were vulnerable to attack.

So much for working together.

“Dino,” Diego said, knowing the man was standing right behind him. “You’re my new second-in-command.”

“Me?” Dino squeaked. “Why me?”

Diego smirked as he turned to face his friend. “Because I don’t like you.”

They both knew that was a lie.

“I’m kind of getting that vibe, man,” Dino said.

“I need to see all of the human warriors.”

“Oh, there’s an office off the great hall,” Dino supplied.

“Good. I’ll meet with them there.” If Xavier wasn’t going to insure that their people were safe, Diego was. “And have someone bring me a tray of food. I still haven’t eaten.”

Diego pressed his hand over his abdomen. There was the slightest of bumps there, barely noticeable.

“You gonna talk about that?”

“About what?” Diego asked innocently.

“Gee, I don’t know, the fact that you went and got yourself knocked up by the biggest baddest dragon warrior in the southern territory?”

Diego rubbed the three red dots on his cheekbone. If it had just been the baby bump, he probably could have hidden that a few more weeks. The dots on the face, not so much.

“We mated.”

“Uh-huh.”

Diego rolled his eyes. “And…Xavier made my toes curl.”

Dino grinned. “About damn time.”

Diego frowned as he turned to look at Dino. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Paolo didn’t do it for you.”

True, but…

“And you know this how?”

“Really?” Dino gave him a look that said he was being an idiot. “If you find someone that curls your toes, you don’t leave that someone’s bed unless you have to. You never even let Paulo spend the night.”

Again, true. He had usually sent Paolo home right after they had gotten done having sex. All this time, Diego thought it was simply that he didn’t like sleeping with anyone else in his bed. Now, he was beginning to wonder. He could think of nothing he wanted more than to spend the night in Xavier’s bed, wrapped in his arms.

If his mate ever came home.

“Come on,” he said as he started back inside the keep. “I need to talk with the warriors and then get a feel for this place.”

“Oh, you’ll love it,” Dino said as he hurried inside with him. “Whoever built this place did a damn good job.
