Chapter Fourteen

My eyes snapped open, and I bolted out of bed, my heart pounding in my chest in sync with the pulse booming between my ears. Sweat trickled down my brow, and I blinked over and over, trying to make sense of what just happened. My folds were slick, just as they were when I used to wake from erotic nightmares, but my core also ached from the sensation of having been stretched.

“What the bloody hell was that?” I stared down at the dome in my arms, examining Valentine’s heart.

The organ floated inches from its transparent base, looking even fresher than before. Thick veins I’d never noticed before ran beneath its reddened surface and the shadows streaming through its arteries appeared thinner.

Shuffling up to the headboard, I raised my head and turned to the wall of windows on my left, wondering if the quality of the light was playing tricks on my mind. Daylight streamed in from a brilliant white sky, with a red haze glowing behind an unmoving London Eye.

From the height of the sun, I guessed it was somewhere between seven and nine in the morning. My tongue darted out to lick my lips. Had that been a dream or a real connection of our souls? How could I have burned him to ashes with all the firestone encasing my heart?

As my breathing slowed and oxygen filtered through my brain, realization hit me as bright as day. The firestone was stuck in my body—not my soul. I’d probably climaxed, transformed into a phoenix, and burned Valentine into ashes.

Despair swirled through my insides like a cold wind, threatening to tear apart my soul. I clenched my teeth, reminding myself that Valentine had endured much worse. And his heart looked better than ever.

If he could survive a solid flame blade, and having his corpse mutilated and hammered into a stone plinth, he would survive being burned by a phoenix. I nodded, trying to convince myself that I was right.

But that didn’t mean I wouldn’t go back and check.

With a deep breath, I closed my fingers around the crystal dome and stared at his floating heart.

Nothing happened.

I squeezed my eyes shut and took another deep inhale, trying to drift into meditation.

Still, nothing happened.

Anxiety rippled across my skin, but I shook it off. I was a bloody sword, forged through pain and hardship. I wouldn’t let myself fall to despair. When my final attempt to connect with Valentine’s heart didn’t work, I slipped the dome into the pocket of my cloak and swung my legs out of bed.

Time passed differently in that void. If I really had burned him into ashes, he would be back to normal in time for my next visit. It had been nearly twenty-four hours since I had discovered that Beatrice was in the clutches of Lazarus, and I had to do something to rescue my best friend.

After a quick shower and a change of clothes, I stepped out into the hallway and continued toward the refectory, feeling out for Aurora.
