Chapter Eight

The lights were on in the living room of Chance’s spacious condo. Nina was still up, watching TV. She was dressed down in silk pajamas, and a bonnet covered her curly weave. Both Nasim and Chase were asleep on a pallet by Nina’s feet.

“What happened to you?” Chance asked as he locked the three deadbolts attached to the door.

“Shh,” Nina whispered, putting her forefinger against her pouty lips. “Let’s put them in their beds first, then we can talk.”

They picked up the boys and carried them into Chase’s room, where his mahogany bunk bed set sat.

“So, what happened?” Chance asked as they were back in the living room on the couch. Pulling out another Dutch stuffed with three grams of Kush, Chance sparked the blunt.

Nina reached her hand out for the blunt and laughed. Chance was on time with this one. She took a long drag before responding. “I just can’t fuck with her.” Nina sighed and shrugged her shoulders, exhaling the smoke. A relaxation set over her instantly. It had been months since she’d smoked weed, and honestly, she missed it. “I tried to be nice to the girl, but she kept trying me, throwing shade and shit. And the crazy part about it is she only did it when you weren’t around. I can’t fuck with no wishy-washy shit like that. So, the last time she tried me, I had to put her in her place.”

Chance shook his head as Nina passed the blunt back to him.

“I tried for you, though, Chance. I really did, but it’s just something about that girl that turns my vibe off so much. You can continue fucking with her, but I don’t want no dealings.”

Chance puffed the blunt and nodded as he listened to Nina. He knew her well enough to know that she meant what she said. If Nina got a bad vibe off you one time, she would not fuck with you again on any level. He just wondered why she didn’t catch that vibe from Yasin. Maybe they wouldn’t be in the situation they were in now if she had.

“You mentioned Nasim being mine to her. Now she thinks I lied to her because when she first asked me about it, I said no.”

“So what?” Nina rolled her eyes. “It’s really none of her business. But don’t worry, we’ll have the results in two weeks. If my son turns out to be yours, I’m sorry about the problems it’s going to cause in your relationship. I never wanted him to be a burden.” There was sarcasm laced in Nina’s tone. Chance acted like he cared more about Yasmine’s feelings than finding out Nasim’s true paternity. It had Nina feeling a type of way, and she couldn’t hide it. With Nina, everything had to be out on the surface. She valued honesty, no matter how hard it could be to bear. That was part of the reason why she was still hurt over how things had played out with Chance two years ago.
