After close to a year, Warfield began shooting again. He avoided going to Riley’s because he was embarrassed to face Mr. Reynolds. Warfield practiced in a pool room on 128th and Kinsman Avenue, miles away, daily, recalling everything Reynolds had taught him.

He played out of town, winning three small tournaments and one major one in Indianapolis, beating a few of the local hustlers, including Johnny Winchester, the winner of the Manchester event, and mentally scratching and clawing his way back to a normal life.

A few days before she succumbed, Valerie had motioned for Warfield to come closer, “I told you I knew something about death and dying?”

“Yes?”

“It’s more important you treasure the memories you had while Carl was alive.”

Warfield nodded.

“And I wish you would cherish the time we spent together. I hope you enjoyed it half as much as I did, because as short a time as it was, I...I loved every second we shared, Xavier.”

“You aren’t going anywhere, Valerie. We’ve got so much to do. So much time to make up...”

She had patted his hand weakly. “Cherish life, Xavier.”
