CHAPTER TEN

That same afternoon Kitty and Fran had settled down quietly at the kitchen table with mugs of coffee and a plate of biscuits. Ray had taken the children to the park, and this was their first chance of a real chat together. Francesca smiled at her sister over the rim of her mug. “Listen, Kitty,” she said, putting the mug down carefully, “you don’t seem to be getting far with John, and Jane and I were wondering if you’d like a bit of help in that direction. We’ve had an idea.”

Kitty was obviously troubled by her sister’s suggestion. “What sort of idea? You know John, he’d be all mortified if you or Jane tackled him about it. What sort of idea is it, anyway?” She wasn’t sure that she wanted anyone else organising her love life.

“Of course we wouldn’t tackle him, Francesca said scornfully, “But what if you went on holiday together, away from all interruptions from John’s pupils and all the folks you knew? Just the two of you in a different place. Couldn’t it make him talk to you without worrying about others, just as the person you are?”

Kitty gave her sister a wry smile. “And how would we do that? Can you see him asking me? And could he afford it, he’s much too much of a gentleman, for want of a better phrase, to let me pay for myself, even if I could. It’s a great idea but a definite non-starter, Fran.”

“Listen. Jane knew all that when she suggested it. But what if we said you’d won a competition for a holiday for two and wanted him to go with you? That would solve the problem of his pride. And then Jane roped Terry in, and he dropped the hint to Richard Treherne that we were all clubbing together to give you a few days to yourselves. It worked, just as Jane said it would, and he put on that “he’s my brother and I’ll pay” bit. So, what do you say now? Will you give it a go? He still may say no, of course.”

Kitty was silent for a while, sipping her coffee and gazing into space. If she had John all to herself, well, she’d be stupid to turn it down. Then she said, “Well, what have I got to lose? But where will we go? It would have to be in the school holidays, I suppose.”

Fran’s face was wreathed in a huge smile as she searched in her bag and produced a brochure. “What about Spain? If the going got tough you could always call and see the relatives. Look, this one is five days, and it’s in half term, I’ve checked.” She handed the highly colourful pamphlet across the table. “After five days you’d surely know if you were wasting your time, wouldn’t you?”

Kitty took the brochure, but already her face had lost it’s doubtful look. “And Richard Treherne would really pay for us?” she asked a little incredulously. “Have you spoken to him yourself? Why should he do this for us?”

“I have, and he will.
