It was late and the house was dark. Jolene followed the rows of well placed night lights that lead her down the hall to the stairway leading to the condo’s first floor. She was headed to the kitchen. Her intent was to snack on the jerk chicken that the Atterbury’s cook sent home with them.

Entering the state of the art kitchen, Jolene was so focused on her objective that she was startled when a giant shadow rose from behind the opened refrigerator door. Solo!

She barely suppressed a scream. “Man! You nearly scared me to death. What are you doing down here?”

Solo held up the platter of chicken. “I’m probably here for the same reason you are?” He nodded toward a stool at the marble topped island in the middle of the room. “Take a seat.”

She did. He placed the platter on the counter top and then retrieved plates and silverware before taking a seat. He dished out generous portion of the left overs.

“Thank you.” Jolene was salivating. Taking a bite of the Jamaican treat, she groaned with pleasure. “Lord have mercy this is good! This stuff makes you want to slam your mama!”

Smiling at the amusing idiom, Solo took a bite of their midnight snack. They ate in comfortable silence until he quietly stated, “You handled yourself pretty well today.”

Jolene feigned ignorance. “What do you mean?”

He called her bluff. “You know exactly what I mean. I’ve known Sara for a while and she can be a handful. Rude and insensitive are just two words I can use to describe her. You shouldn’t let her get to you.”

Jolene bristled. “I didn’t.”

He gave her a knowing look. “Yes you did, for a minute. I saw your shoulders sag.”

Both embarrassed and impressed by his keen observation, she bristled, “So what were you doing, spying on me?”

Solo blew out a frustrated breath. “Whew, you don’t give an inch do you?”

“Every once in a while.”

“What happened to your being afraid that I’ll fire Jay if you smart-mouthed me.”

She shrugged a shoulder. “You said you wouldn’t do that and I trust you.”

“You trust me?” He gave her a sardonic smile. “Little old me?”

“Don’t get excited. It’ll pass.”

Solo cackled. “ Jolene you are a breath of fresh air. I don’t know why, but I’m beginning to like you.”

Jolene struck a pose. “Little old me?”

Solo pushed his empty plate aside and planted his elbows on the counter. “Woman you are something else.”

“What can I say? I’m a survivor.”

“I’m beginning to figure that out. You’ve got too much fire in you to let anything get you down for long.”

“Hope so.” Jolene wasn’t too sure about his observation, but she was heartened by his words.

Solo placed his plate in the dishwasher before returning to her. “I’m glad to hear that because I prefer fire, over ice.”

Placing a kiss her on her forehead, he turned and left the kitchen, leaving Jolene sitting in open-mouthed shock.
