Chapter Ten

The telephones had been ringing for days, incessantly. A busy signal only indicated to the caller the necessity to call again, repeatedly. Day in, day out, the phones rang because of what transpired with the DiCarlo empire, crumbling though it may be. Captain Breznet wasn’t the only one overwhelmed by the phone call and the demands that resulted from the calls he managed to answer. His whole team had been inundated, especially his right-hand man, Detective Kendall. After several days of working around the clock, Kendall was given a slight reprieve to go home and get some real rest.

But he was back, after one night of sleeping in his own bed. Immediately upon getting off the elevator on the designated floor, Detective Kendall heard the phones. They didn’t stop ringing as he walked through the bullpen to his desk. Even his phone was ringing. Maurice stopped only long enough to drop off his briefcase and then continued down to the captain’s office. Even as he knocked on Breznet’s door, after being cleared by the captain’s secretary, he could hear the phone ringing inside.

“Come in,” Breznet barked as he rubbed his throbbing temple.

“You going to answer that?” Maurice asked as he sat down across from his boss.

“Hell no,” Breznet sighed. “Hell no.”

For the briefest moment, the phone stopped ringing. Breznet dared not breathe a sigh of relief. That would have been presumptuous on his part. And just as he thought, the minute he allowed his back to rest against the well-worn leather chair, the phone rang again.

“Goddammit!”

Kendall wasn’t surprised by his boss’s reaction. Before his brief sabbatical, the phones rang nonstop. Every call was about the DiCarlo situation, whether legitimate or otherwise. The moment Breznet picked up the phone, Kendall knew nothing had changed.

“No, we don’t have any new information,” Breznet answered. “No, sir.”

Kendall could tell from Breznet’s shift in tonality, he was talking to one of his superiors, one who insisted on reminding the captain that he had people he had to answer to. Kendall watched as the captain’s head fell into his hands. Breznet absentmindedly rubbed his temple as he got his ass chewed out yet again. Maurice could only hear bits and pieces of the conversation. But as the person on the other end ended his diatribe, Breznet lifted his head, put his finger to his lips to ensure the detective’s silence, and quietly put the phone on speaker.

“Now that all official business has been discussed, I need you to listen and listen closely.”

“I’m all ears, sir,” Breznet replied, stopping short of rolling his eyes. That took too much effort, and the captain was mentally and physically exhausted.

“Tread lightly. Be amenable to placate the DiCarlo’s but do not, I repeat, do not directly interview them,” his superior warned. “There are people who sit in higher places than I do that don’t want the locals to step on important toes. Understood?”

“Understood.”

The call was disconnected before the captain’s response fully passed through his lips.

“I guess he didn’t need my compliance,” Breznet huffed, slamming down the desk phone.
