Chapter twenty-three

Mads and I walk out of the bathroom to find Damien leaning against the wall outside. He holds out a brown paper bag, giving me a cautious look.

“I’ll umm, I’ll meet up with you later. I’ve got to go see the concierge about a penthouse suite,” Mads says.

“No need,” I say. Though my response is for Mads, my glare is set on Damien. “I’m not staying to chat. I’ll go with you. I have something to give Lucia anyway.”

He pushes off the wall. “We need to talk.”

“Seeing how you already know my type and my intentions, we have nothing to talk about,” I state.

“Liv, please.” His tone is quiet and surprisingly sincere. He looks at me as if he’s trying to call upon the magnetic field that usually encapsulates us. And while I don’t feel the visceral pull to him, looking into his amber eyes, I’m reminded of the companionability between us in the cabana, and my disdain begins to wash away like a wave receding into the sea. But then I remember the pain I felt at his comment this morning—the same pain I felt when I followed him out of that ballroom in Miami. I didn’t want to wait for him that night. I wanted to run to him. But when I did, I found him wrapped around Aisha.

That pain is all it takes to figuratively dig my heels into the sand.

“I need some time.”

Mads clears her throat, reminding us she’s just a few feet away, and I turn to leave with her, forgetting all about the bag of my clothes.
