Chapter 9

The Next Two Mornings

Jaden had kept the fire going all night. When Imani woke up, her back sore from sleeping on the floor, Jaden was weary-eyed and covered in soot. His fingers were dirty and smelled like smoke. There were traces of ash on his face where he blew into the embers to keep the fire lit. The wood was nearly depleted. Jaden was not very good at rationing. Yet Imani was proud of his efforts, even if it would mean they may freeze. However, she had devised a plan.

“Good morning,” Imani said as she rose from the floor.

“Morning,” Jaden smiled with tired, red eyes. “How’d you sleep?”

“Not great,” Imani stretched as she groaned. “The floor was hard. I guess you never got to sleep?”

“I did a little,” Jaden replied, “but the fire was almost out when I woke up, and I’ve spent most of the morning watching it.” He looked down at his phone. “I even tried to get service. Nothing.” Jaden threw his phone down in frustration.

Imani decided to share her plan. “Well, we have some warm clothes here. There is equipment to get us up the mountain for help. Let’s try to leave.”

“The blizzard got worse last night.” Jaden pointed to the window. “I don’t know if you heard the wind last night. It was loud and cold. I stepped out for a short moment, and I was instantly frozen by the wind. It made all the hairs on my body stand up. No, we’re safer here. There’s no way for us to know how the weather will be. It’s better if we stick together here until the storms subside.”

Imani wanted to argue her point, but Jaden was making sense. She wondered what revelations he had that night made him so rational and sure. She felt a slight attraction to him this way.

“Okay,” Imani nodded. “Well, we need to find some more food. I don’t know how much is left in the pantry.”

“Okay, we can look around. I can go outside really fast to get in the car. It’s a rental, and there may be an emergency kit in there,” Jaden suggested.

“Great, I will scrounge up something to make for breakfast.” Imani got up from the sleeping bag and put her hand on Jaden’s shoulder. “Be careful out there. It may be icy. I don’t want you to get hurt.”

Jaden’s eyes sparkled. “I’ll be fine,” he nodded.

Jaden put on his overcoat and went outside. Imani watched as he left. She had a twinge of longing like she didn’t want him to leave her, not even for a moment. She snapped out of her emotions and began looking for something for them to eat. She managed to find some coffee grounds, but the coffee maker was electric since the power was out. She could fashion some tin foil around the coffee pot to use over the fire. She placed the coffee grounds in the filter, tied it together, and submerged it into the pot. She let the water come to a boil, and the coffee began to brew.
