Chapter Seven

She was going to have to stay away from Jackson’s lips, Helena thought the next morning as she pushed the vacuum cleaner over the floor.

That embrace had left her trembling for hours. Moreover, the moment when Jackson had felt her baby kick was probably going to be emblazoned on her memory forever. That startled, guarded look followed by regret. He had forgotten for a moment that she was pregnant, but once he’d remembered, he’d quickly backed away.

“And why not?” she muttered. “The man made it very clear from the start he wasn’t interested in commitment. You can’t fault him for that.”

At least he’d been decent enough to let her know how things stood. No other man had ever been that honest before.

So why was she feeling so sad this morning?

Because I’m pregnant, of course. Emotional. And because for a moment there she’d felt beautiful, not big. And gosh darn it, because Jackson Castle was the first man ever who had looked at her work and made her feel that it was really special, that he understood.

That didn’t mean she wanted to let anything mess with the safe life plan she’d made. All she needed was baby Austin-to-be and her work.

She wrestled the vacuum cleaner deeper into a corner.

“I’m not letting myself be a target for heartache again,” she said vehemently. “And Jackson Castle is dead certain heartache. No question, that man has kissed thousands of women. He’s slain hundreds of hearts. And none of them were humongously pregnant. Except for his wife.”

His wife. Helena wondered what the woman had looked like. She wondered if her sister, Lilah, had any old back issues of magazines that would have shown the woman.

And that was it. Helena stopped in her tracks. She stood there leaning on the vacuum cleaner counting the seconds until sanity returned. She couldn’t believe she was actually torturing herself with worries about how lovely Jackson’s ex-wife or any of his other women had been.

Not when, in a matter of days, she would just be an ex-cook, just another woman Jackson had once kissed in a brief mad moment and then walked away from.

She’d been walked away from too many times.

So, leave.

“I can’t,” she whispered out loud.

The reasons were complex. They went beyond the fact that she wanted the chance to try her skills on those who would come to Jackson’s gathering, or that she wanted to help her friends.

The fact was that, rich as he was, Jackson had old scars from people walking away from him, too. His mother. His wife. And in spite of the fact that he was uncomfortable letting people get too close, he was here trying to do a good thing. How could she ignore all of that?

So stay. Deal with the risk.

Helena gave the vacuum a long hard push as if to punctuate her thoughts, and shut off the machine. She blew out a breath that raised the bangs on her forehead. She hugged her arms close to her.

“Helena?”

Jackson’s deep voice was filled with dread.
