Chapter Sixteen

Sleep was a concept Roman had never explored.

There had been no sense of time in his life before, no day or night, no period of activity followed by inactivity. When Invidia had mentioned it to him, her words muffled against his chest, he hadn’t known what to think. Processing what he had experienced with her was enough of an undertaking. The way she had consumed him, squeezed him and ridden him to oblivion…he wanted to relive these minutes as much as possible. He wanted to catalog them, keep them close, just in case it should never happen again.

He’d thought what had happened with Lilith had been special. How wrong he’d been.

Daylight burned brighter into the room, making play with the shadows. Through it all, Roman had watched Invidia. She had closed her eyes and mumbled something before falling still, and still she had been for a while. The act of sleeping seemed so strange to him—perhaps because he had never felt the need before. But then, he had also never felt the need for physical intimacy, and suddenly it was something his body craved. Perhaps it was all a matter of perception.

Eventually, he had closed his eyes and done his best to relax. Not an easy feat for a man accustomed to always being on alert. Still, Invidia had reduced his limbs to a somewhat languid state with the fervor of their lovemaking, and commanding the rest of his body to calm hadn’t taken much. Soon the space around his head had become fogged and somewhat heavy, as though the air had assumed more weight. Chasing his thoughts had become ineffective, as they’d taken random turns and transformed from one stream to another. He’d lost all concept of time and reality, and had drifted into a blessed state of being separate from anything he’d touched on this world. It hadn’t been like sex, but nearly as pleasant, though for vastly different reasons.

Then the fog had begun to lift, though Roman couldn’t say what prompted it. He hadn’t wanted to move—his limbs had been blissfully relaxed, his body having contorted at some point to his side. When he’d opened his eyes, he’d found Invidia still asleep beside him. She had been on her back, the blankets a tangle around her legs. Her pert, perfect breasts had been exposed to his gaze, and the sight of them had chased away his exhaustion.

Roman wasn’t sure what it was about her breasts that captivated him. He had a reasonable sensibility when it came to social taboos—knew humans in this society felt certain areas of the body were considered more sexually desirable than others. He had no such basis or construct. A breast to him should be no more remarkable than a palm or an elbow. Yet the sight of Invidia’s breasts made his body stir. He recalled their soft weight, how her smooth flesh had felt in his hands. He found himself consumed with the need to pull her nipples between his lips and tug, and the thought alone sent waves of heat through his body, stirring his cock to life.
