‘I don’t want my hair in a ponytail, Daddy. I want to have it down, like Lily.’

‘Fine.’ Finn gave up trying to style the hair of a fidgety five-year-old and simply put a clip in the front to keep it from falling in Niamh’s eyes.

‘I’ve been hearing a lot about this Lily,’ his mother piped up from the corner of the room. It was a rare Saturday morning off for him and they had planned to go out for the day. He should have been prepared for the inquisition, especially when he’d been so late coming from Lily’s a couple of days ago.

They’d both been busy with work since, but had kept in touch with a few sexy text messages. There was no denying he’d enjoyed their night together, but this was new territory for him. He didn’t have any regrets about sleeping with Lily, but he did have to pause and think about what they were doing and how it might affect his children. Some time apart from her would clear his head so he wasn’t constantly thinking about how much he wanted to do it all over again.

His mother would be over the moon to know he had found a woman he liked, more than liked if it wasn’t too scary to admit to himself. However, that was the problem. Finn didn’t want his mum, or anyone else, to get carried away by the fact he’d met someone when he couldn’t predict what, if anything, it would lead to.

‘She’s also a very busy doctor.’ He wasn’t about to give his mother reason to think she should be buying a hat for their wedding. She meant well, but Finn didn’t need the added pressure of his mum interfering in his love life.

It was still strange to even think he had one after the death of his wife, and something he needed to get used to. At least by keeping things casual he could back away if it turned out he wasn’t ready even for that.

‘Uh-huh. Well, the girls like her...’

‘Lily read us bedtime stories,’ Niamh added in support of the idea that she would make a suitable match. It would definitely have made a difference if the children hadn’t taken to her, but they were clearly fans already. That would put him under more pressure to make things work if their budding relationship should ever be made public.

‘She’s a very likeable person. Now, are
