CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Nathan

I felt like I’d been looking up at the ceiling above me for hours. In a hospital, that much is obvious, but this can’t be a military hospital like I thought when I first woke up.

It’s far too quiet and spacious to be a military hospital in the middle of a war.

So, where am I? And what happened? These are the things I’ve been contemplating while staring at the ceiling.

Waking up alone in a quiet hospital had me wondering if I was in the middle of an apocalypse. That first episode of The Walking Dead came to mind, where Rick wakes up and there’s no one to help him. No one alive that is. But that’s TV, and this is real life.

Gradually, I heard muffled sounds coming from outside my door, and occasionally I heard someone getting paged over the intercom system. So, I wasn’t alone at least. No reason to panic. Someone would come in eventually. Wonderful, because I did NOT feel like moving right now.

Just as I thought this, a nurse came in.

“It’s good to see you awake. And how're you feeling this morning?” She said in a cheery tone.

This morning? Did that mean I'd been here more than one day? I tried to think back to yesterday, but my mind was fuzzy.

“Where am I? How'd I get here?” My voice sounded raspy to my ears, and suddenly I wanted some water.

“So, you still have amnesia? Do you know your name?” As she asked her questions, she raised the head of my bed, and brought a cup with a straw to my lips. So, I drank.

From habit, I said, “Thank you." for the water, and, "yes, my name's Nathan Mitchell.” In answer to her second question. What was her first question?

“And how old are you?”

What an odd question to ask. “I’m twenty-five.”

“What’s the last thing you remember?”

“The last thing I remember is … ," and something finally came to me, "is waking up in the hospital after the IED went off. It took out two trucks and half our patrol. The doctor said I had a dislocated shoulder, a shattered ankle, and a concussion." What he hadn't mentioned was how I was alive when others weren’t.

“Maybe I shouldn't tell you this, but if you were twenty-five when that happened, then you’re missing about seven years. You had a car accident on your way home yesterday, and I believe you work in construction now.” She said this slowly, watching for my reaction.

“Seven years? How could that be?” If I hadn't been able to move before, my body was definitely numb now from shock.

“According to your chart, you’re thirty-two now. I know it’s confusing, but it’s common to have short-term memory loss after a concussion. Give it time, and your memories will return. It’s best not to force it, though.”

She brought the cup back to my lips, and I drank more water.

“Drink as much as you comfortably can." She said, as she set the cup down on the side table where I could reach it later.
