Chapter 10

Jordan walked back into the Bullpen and found Rebecca studying her notebook. “Get a hit?”

Rebecca looked up and shot Jordan a tired smile. “Maybe something, I don’t know yet.” Rebecca didn’t see Matt, and she cocked an eyebrow inquisitively. “Lose something?”

Jordan looked momentarily puzzled then forced a smile. “Apparently so. Rick around?”

“Yo.” Rick strolled toward them, taking bites from a day-old donut. “What’s up?”

“I was just about to tell Rebecca that it seems I’m without a partner…at least until they find me a new one.” Jordan almost cracked at the shocked expressions on Rebecca and Rick’s faces. “We got a huge surprise back at headquarters. I guess Matt put in for a promotion in the Indy office and got it. He’s leaving tomorrow.”

Rebecca’s brow furrowed. “So soon?”

Jordan shifted nervously. “Yeah, I guess he has to get down there immediately and get his bearings.”

“Hmm.” Rebecca tapped her pen against the desk.

“Hmm, what?” Jordan hoped that she wouldn’t keep pressing. It was already killing her to lie and if Rebecca was the least bit suspicious, she wouldn’t let it drop until she had the truth.

“Just seems odd he wouldn’t have said anything.”

“I know.” Jordan stammered. “I was just as shocked as you. I guess he didn’t say anything, in case nothing came of it. He didn’t want to rock the boat for no reason.”

Rick popped the last of his donut in his mouth and brushed his hands on his jeans. “I’m not surprised. He don’t talk much even when it’s just the two of us. Nothing wrong with keeping things to yourself. So, I guess there won’t be a going-away party?”

Jordan chuckled and shook her head, silently relieved that Rick had made the situation a little better by giving credence to Matt’s silence. It made the lies easier. “No, guess not. Maybe we can send a cookie bouquet to his new office.”

Rick laughed at Jordan’s sarcasm. “Did he get the big office?”

Jordan forced a smile. “Yep, Assistant Director Riley. Has a nice ring to it, huh?”

“Yes, it does have a nice ring to it.” Rebecca watched her partner’s face. Something seemed off, and she couldn’t put her finger on it. Jordan seemed thrilled for Matt, but there was wariness in her eyes that worried Rebecca. She hadn’t lived with Jordan for all these months and not picked up on the subtleties of her lover. Perhaps, it was just anxiety over training a new partner. Shaking her head, Rebecca smiled. “He’s kind of a dirt bag for leaving us right in the middle of this investigation.” Rebecca’s eyes twinkled mischievously, belying her words.

“Yeah, now I’m stuck working with two women again.” Rick teased lightly, trying to lessen the intensity of the moment. Despite her teasing, he wasn’t oblivious to the fact that Rebecca had immediately tensed at the news. She didn’t get to be the detective she was by ignoring her gut. He saw it at work on way too many occasions. Only this time, he wasn’t sure she was right. To him, everything seemed normal.
