Chapter Eleven

JANE

It was like being sandwiched between three pro-wrestlers—only bigger. I couldn't see a damn thing with the wall of muscle blocking my view. Once I managed to wriggle my way through the crowd of silver guys, it was like stepping foot onto a sci-fi movie set.

"Holy shit." I pushed ahead of the group. "Beam me up, Scotty."

"Who's Scotty?" My warrior's jealousy didn't miss a beat as he joined me inside what looked like a larger version of a shuttlecraft straight off the Starship Enterprise.

"Slow your roll. He's a fictional character." I smiled back at Aggar, liking his possessive side.

This must be the first scout ship Aggar told me was stuck in the mountain. Off to one side, there was noticeable damage to the hull. Azure rocks protruded inside, having peeled back the skin of the craft as if it had been flown too close to the mountain.

Two swivel seats were bolted to the floor in front of a long console that had sustained minor damage on one side. A third seat, occupied by a male, sat perpendicular down the side wall facing a bank of monitors. His back was to us when we first arrived but turned in the seat and greeted Sia Xennox.

"Linnox," Sia Xennox ordered. "Show them how we were able to track the alien's crafts."

I was holding onto my opinion of Jurigon's ruler. My first impression was one of a highborn snob. Whenever he looked at me, it was as if I were an interesting bug he'd put in a jar. The longer I was around him, the more I found he had a depth to him that was strangely charming.

Aggar bee-lined for the seated male, whose attention had returned to the monitor screens spread out before him. A slew of information scrolled through on one of the monitors, while another showed a row of lines cresting in varying smooth peaks like radio waves. All the rest showed blobs of different shades of blue and silver, which Aggar found fascinating, but made little sense to me.

"When the aliens power up their vessels, the tracker picks up a specific frequency in the form of a wave," Linnox explained, pointing first to the monitor with the lines and then to the screens with the blobs. "We can also see the power source, when not powered up, which shows as a specific heat signature in this strange hue. The larger the heat signature, the larger the craft."

"Red," I blurted out. "The strange hue is the color red."

"There. You have your answer, human female." Sia Xennox bowed his head. "Jane of Earth."

"Thank you, Valosian male." I returned his slightly mocking bow with a smirk splayed across my lips. "Sia Xennox of Valose. And just Jane will be fine."

His eyes narrowed in that assessing way of his, so I turned my back and wandered around the ship. I didn't need to feign interest, because this thing was way cooler than the ship that I'd crash-landed in.

The door to the craft swooshed open and then closed.
