*1 In fact the Messinesi, increasingly concerned at the rise of Palermo, would have welcomed a separation. In 1629 they offered a million scudi to Spain if she would divide the island into two at the Salso River, with twin Viceroys in Palermo and Messina. The King, Philip IV, was tempted, but declined.
