CHAPTER 7
Expect a Miracle
Shifting Belief
Lesson: Faith, or the Law of Expectation, taps into the manifestation of the Kingdom of God.
The explosion of Godâs presence ignited faith for the miraculous in revival meetings throughout history. Oral Roberts would teach, âExpect a miracle!â And he would say of Kathryn Kuhlman, âShe lived in the presence of God.â1 It was that manifested presence that was the breeding ground of the miraculous.
In many ways today we must learn like Miss Kuhlman. In the 1940s, she began to attend services of certain healing evangelists, like Oral Roberts, to judge the validity of the modern-day miraculous. Intrigued by what was being said at these healing meetings, she searched the Scriptures for verification. Once she saw the miraculous in the Scriptures, she would say, âI knew if I lived and died and never saw a single healing miracle like the apostles experienced in the Book of Acts, it would not change Godâs Word⦠God said itâ¦and whether I ever saw it with my earthly eyes did not change the fact it was so.â2 She simply believed it.
From that day forward, her face was âset like a flintâ toward Godâs miracle-working power. She knew God was a wonder worker. In an unexpected event in 1947, a woman testified that she had been healed of a cancerous tumor in one of Miss Kuhlmanâs services the night before. It was the first of many thousands of healings that would follow. Miss Kuhlman had been teaching on the Holy Spirit that night and had not had a healing line or even a prayer for healing.3 Thus, she did not follow the pattern of the Voice of Healing evangelistsâ (1947â1958) use of prayer linesâ¦yet she saw supernatural occurrences in her meetings.
The Voice of Healing revival was a move of signs, wonders, healings, deliverance, and miracles. The common heartbeat of these services were the miraclesâthe time when the Holy Spirit would heal the sick and raise the dead.4It was a movement fueled by faith.
Gordon Lindsay would say this concerning John Alexander Dowie at the turn of the century (1847â1907): âDisappointment followed disappointment as long as Dr. Dowie tried to reach the masses with the Gospel with human methods. It was when he made up his own mind that he would âsink or swimâ in Godâs miraculous flow, that success came to his efforts in ministry. Up until that time the world turned a deaf ear to him, but once his ministry was inundated with the miraculous, they beat a path to his door.â5 The miracles were the âdinner bellâ to the Gospel.
Just before the turn of the century, while Dr. Dowie was still in Melbourne, Australia, a woman named Lucy Parker came to one of his services.
