Chapter 16

Outside the Pierces’ black gates on my M-cycle, my head spins. It’s been weeks since my birthday, but I’m still going to count the possibility of seeing Ten today as my best gift.

Because of who Nathaniel Hawkins is, Mr. Robinson was able to pull a few strings and get a letter from Tenly’s family a bit earlier than usual. Delivering it does make me slightly jealous that there isn’t one for me, but in the end I’m glad for Ten. Plus it gives me the excuse to finally see her.

My arms are heavy as the gates to the Pierces’ estate open, emitting a barely audible creak. Slowly I pull through and follow the driveway up and around. To be safe, I park slightly to the side and in a spot where the bike isn’t too obvious. Parking directly in front would be extremely bad manners even if I weren’t a Cobalt entering a Scarlet household.

After getting my bearings, I make my way around to the back door, where the staff might enter, and wait as Mr. Robinson told me to do.

Nervousness prickles at my chest as I hope for Isaiah, keen on not running into any of the other staff. He knows I’m coming, and my instinct was right the last time I was here. Who knows why I sensed it, but he is indeed a contact of Mr. Robinson. I didn’t ask my boss a lot of questions, but my mind couldn’t help but put together the bioweapon concern with the fact that Dr. Pierce is a virologist for the Carmine government. So having someone in the house to keep tabs on him is probably in the best interest of the Alliance. Hopefully Mia and the others will get to the bottom of the bird deaths soon and it will turn out to be nothing.

Lucky for me, I wait less than five minutes at the staff door and an older Asian man appears: Isaiah.

“Ah, Mr. Fisher. I saw on my device that you’d arrived with the post.” He nods and motions me away from the entrance. “No need for you to be lurking any longer than necessary,” he says as we make our way further around the rear of the house, in sight of the large, sprawling garden. Movement about halfway out catches my attention, and I know it’s her. The way Tenly’s body moves is something I simply can’t drive from my mind.

“Do you have anything for me?” Isaiah asks.

I nod, reach into an outer pocket of my bag, and quickly hand him the small, sealed envelope that Mr. Robinson had given me along with Tenly’s letter. He takes it and stores it away in his jacket pocket. But as risky as the handoff is, it matters little to me. I try to keep my attention trained on Isaiah, but the thought of seeing Tenly makes my heart go wild. To keep myself from fidgeting too much, I shove my hands deep into my pockets.

“Thank you. I’ll have something for Robinson next time.
