Chapter 6 West Wing Window

“Who is the lead investigator on this?” he asked, turning to the President.

“Agent Wicker, of the FBI,” President Hardwood replied.

“Can we get him down here?”

“What have you found?”

“Not sure yet. I need some information to make sense of what I’m thinking,” Shatter replied, still pensive in his demeanor.

President Hardwood pulled out his phone to call his aide who would make it happen when Shatter remembered something else.

“Mr. President, one moment.”

“What is it?”

“Who am I?”

“Excuse me?”

“When the FBI comes in here and I introduce myself, I do not want to have to lie.”

Silence indicated that President Hardwood was contemplating the ramifications of lying to the FBI. Even he was not immune from that.

“While we are at it, the Secret Service is uncomfortable with my presence, since they can’t get a background on me. If I am not mistaken, I think my prints would have come back showing I am deceased.”

“What?”

“Long story. But the point is that I think if I’m going to be around you more often, we need to create some kind of cover, and one that does not involve lying to the FBI.”

“I don’t need to look like a hero, Kyle.”

“Sorry, sir. I did not mean it in that way. But, if you look like a hero, the country feels safe. It will give them the assurance that Washington is actually doing their job. The wires are packed with news and anecdotes about how the government is not working. Telling the American people of foiled attacks will make them feel safer.”

“Well, Kyle, that does make sense.”

“In the meantime, we will have to create a new identity for me and a new backstory. I am sure the Secret Service is already trying to figure out who I am and that they’ve already got the CIA on it as well.”

“Contrary to popular belief, the CIA and the Secret Service don’t like each other very much.”

A grin prefaced Shatter’s response.

“Be that as it may sir, we need to resolve the issue of who I am before they make a big fuss. I will create a plausible identity for Kyle Shatter and reverse that whole being dead thing by tomorrow, but I will seal the deeper records so that if they need to see it, they’d have to come to you. You’re welcome to release it, or not. I leave that to you.”

“Fair enough. You can create identities?”

Shatter wasn’t surprised. It was not in the president’s line of sight. Sintac was significantly stronger than the president, any president, had ever realized during their tenure. That strength only grew from one administration to the next. The technology
